13 last-minute Halloween costumes you can make with stuff you have in your house

Every year when October rolls around, we get super excited about choosing our Halloween costumes. We could become our favorite meme, make a feminist costume, or choose a getup based on our zodiac sign. The options are endless (except for these offensive Halloween costumes that you should definitely never wear.) But despite our excitement, some years, we never quite get it together in time. If you’re in the same boat and in need of an easy costume, don’t worry.

You can throw together one of these last-minute Halloween costumes with stuff you already have sitting in the house.

Sometimes, the more DIY and last minute a costume is, the more fun it is to wear. Some of these costumes are punny visual gags while others are DIY ways to recreate this year’s most-talked-about pop culture figures. Whichever one of these last-minute Halloween costumes you choose, you’re sure to be the talk of the party.

1A party animal

Lauren Conrad is the undisputed queen of Halloween. (Okay, after Heidi Klum, she’s a close second.) But that doesn’t mean her costumes are impossible to recreate. With just a little makeup and any animal ears you have sitting around the house, you can be a party animal in no time. You’ll need a party outfit, animal ears, a steady hand, and a drink.

2Ariana Grande in the “God is a Woman” music video

This costume confirms that God is a woman. You’ll need a white leotard, purple paint, purple hairspray, and purple makeup. If you want to go all out, you can also paint a canvas to serve as your backdrop.

3One smart cookie

Visual gags are always a hit at Halloween parties. This one’s for you, glasses wearers. You’ll need a red dress, tan poster board and brown construction paper to make the cookie, and a blue ribbon for the prize. Don’t forget your second set of eyes.

4Rosie the Riveter

This iconic feminist hero never goes out of style. You’ll need a denim shirt, jeans, and a red bandana. Then flex away.

5A millennial pink flamingo

Chances are you already own a ton of millennial pink clothes. So put them on and shake your tail feather. You’ll need your favorite millennial pink wardrobe pieces, plus construction paper to fashion your beak.

8The Queen of Hearts

This costume is a royal flush. You’ll need a red dress, a deck of cards, and some red lipstick for a heart-shaped pout. Add a golden crown headband on top for good measure.

9A ventriloquist dummy

You don’t even have to be good at makeup to bring this haunting Halloween costume to life. You’ll need a steady hand, plus whatever your ventriloquist dummy persona likes to wear.

1050 Shades of Gray

Have a ton of gray clothes? Mix and match ‘em for one of the most pun-tastic last-minute Halloween costume we can dream up. You’ll need your favorite gray wardrobe pieces.

11An unopened juice box

People will know what you are immediately. And they will LOVE it. You’ll need a solid-colored dress, plus saran wrap and white paper for the straw. Nostalgia factor for the win.

12A plant lady

This Halloween costume is BYOS. (Bring your own succulent.) You’ll need a green top and bottom, plus some plants to carry for decoration.

13Serena Williams clapping back at her haters

Honor the GOAT by recreating her outfit from the 2018 U.S. Open. You’ll need a black leotard, a black tutu, a pair of sneakers, and a tennis racket to pull it all together. Honestly, we’d rock this look every day.

Happy Halloween!
