·3 min read

This month the worker bees at Epicurious are eager to jump back into a packed schedule of outdoor dinner parties, picnic excursions to the beach and the park, and of course, lots and lots of grilling. Here's what we've been buying this month to get ready for those summertime plans.

Outdoor dining season

"I am a Smokey Joe disciple, in part because they're pretty inexpensive: If, hypothetically, after five years of constant use, you need to replace your older grill, it'll only set you back $35. This guy is the perfect size for charcoal cooking on my rooftop, then toting it back inside after everything's cooled and cleaned for storage. And it can fit a rack of spare ribs, no problem." —Kendra Vaculin, staff writer

I love finally living somewhere where the evenings are warm enough for dinner outside. I hate living somewhere where the wild swarm of mosquitoes rules out that possibility from mid-summer through mid-fall. The best solution I've found so far are these mosquito granules, which are loaded with citronella, garlic, geranium oil, cedarwood oil, and lemongrass oil. But this year I also bought these "flyaway sticks" from Terrain, which are rumored to help. Fingers crossed we'll be grilling without bites into August and beyond. —Maggie Hoffman, digital director

“I'm really into these candles I found on Etsy. I just re-upped my stash of the Neroli and the Saffron. I'd been burning them alone for the past six months, but now I'm excited to have one going in my entryway as I have a few friends over for drinks.” —Emily Johnson, senior commerce editor

“I got to drink out of these glasses our Digital Director Maggie wrote about recently, and I feel like now that I know this thin, delicate, luxurious wine glass life, I can never go back to my old ways. I haven't actually ordered them for myself yet, but I am on the precipice.”—E.J.

“I recently got a kitchen island for my new apartment that has a bamboo butcher block topper. It took me a day to realize that I had to actually oil and seal the counter myself, since it was absorbing water and stains like nobody's business. I bought a bottle of Howard's Cutting Board Oil at my local hardware store to get the job done.” —Wilder Davies, staff writer

Stylish staples

“I got tired of having weak, store-bought pepper grinders in my apartment, so I bought these Copenhagen Salt and Pepper Grinders, which have strong pepper-grinding technology. Am I putting too much pepper on everything I eat now? Yes, but I have no regrets.” —Travis Rainey

Snacks on the go

"I'm not a big jerky gal usually, but I am obsessed with the Epic Chicken Sriracha Bars for a super savory, slightly spicy bite on the go. Granola bars and other sweet-angled stuff just makes me feel like I'm eating dessert, so I love having something meaty and salty to snack on that actually feels satisfying." —K.V.
