First, an admission. I think I look terrible in a polo. I think it's just the length or lack thereof of my torso. Unless I've got high waisted pants on—and sometimes I do—it makes me look like a child. And so what I do, is, rarely wear a polo to play golf, unless I have to, because of a club's dress code. And when that happens, I usually, regardless of weather, throw a long-sleeved layer on over top. When it's hot, I remind myself that the right style comes at a price. When it's cold, I feel vindicated.
Whether you are looking for a new sweater for the golf course out of insecurity or necessity, there's never been a better time to invest in one. That's because the best golf sweaters aren't all necessarily made for golf in the first place. Amongst the turtlenecks, crewnecks, v-necks, and pullovers mentioned below are garments you'll be proud to work into your everyday life, regardless of how many tee times are in your future.
It's not just a sign of good style when you grab one of these—it's a good financial decision, a two'fer, if you will.
Cable-Knit Crewneck Sweater
PGA Tour player Keith Mitchell earned the nickname Cashmere Keith for his commitment to Sid Mashburn's cashmere golf sweaters. We've yet to see Keith go full cable-knit—but you can.
Washable Cashmere Sweater
As classic as it gets, without all the laundry hassle. Go ahead and throw this cashmere sweater in with the rest of your laundry, saving you one less dry cleaning line item. (Just don't put it in the dryer).
French Terry Cardigan
A french-terry cardigan you'll find yourself sipping coffee in on Sunday mornings (before your tee time, of course). Public Drip brings classic menswear silhouettes like this into the golfing sphere.
Oversized-Fit Fleece Half Zip
A half-zip is a golf staple, and Lululemon is a performance powerhouse. That manifests in this oversized, on-trend pullover that will have people saying "That's Luluemon!?"
Alpaca Popover Polo in Navy
It's a polo, it's a sweater, it's perfect for cooler golf days (or any day for that matter. And it's from Todd Snyder, a tried and true brand for all things extremely wearable and stylish.
Platte Striped Knit
You can't see it, but the beauty in this one is evident before you've fully even got it slipped on. Malbon took a tried and true woolen golf staple and added just enough performance stretch. It's got all the feel of your favorite fair-isle, but is equipped with tech for hitting bombs.
Oval Logo Crewneck
A go-to, cotton-poly blend sweatshirt that offers a casual alternative to the woolen sweaters you're used to reaching for.
Olive Crew Neck Knit
JL is no stranger to making a statement on the course, and this leopard print crewneck sweater will do just that, without screaming it.
Wool Herringbone Jacquard Sweater
Wear it with jeans, a blazer, or yes, whatever pants you're wearing to the course. Wool to keep you warm, windowpane to keep it interesting.
Cashmere Turtleneck Long-Sleeve Sweater
A turtleneck on the course? Not unheard of, and Uniqlo makes our favorite everyday rollneck in the game.
Cashmere V-Neck Sweater
Need a pop of color in a pinch? Land's End's v-neck cashmere sweater will get the job done, all while channeling a little of the Big Cat's Sunday red.
JAINCORE: Stealth Hoodie
Let's finish off with a statement. A hoodie is not a sweater, but as the sweater is the traditional layer for a cold-weather round, in the last decade, the golf hoodie has taken over—and thank the golf gods it has. Jain's stealth hoodie from its new JAINCORE line fits the mold by pushing the envelope with subtlety.
