Call the Midwife's thirteenth season is nearly here (it's airing on PBS starting March 17, 2024), and while we can all breathe a little easier knowing that the series has been renewed through season 15, if you're already craving something to whet your appetite for more Nonnatus House drama, we've pulled together a list of the best shows to sate your appetite for more heartwarming drama a la the midwives of Poplar. Virgin River
For some midwifery drama on this side of the pond, check out this Netflix favorite about Mel, a midwife and nurse who leaves behind her busy life in L.A. to move to the remote town of Virgin River. Its blend of colorful characters, medical drama, and, of course, romance, is a sure win for Call the Midwife fans.
All Creatures Great and Small
Mid-century British period drama? Check. A heartwarming community of quirky characters? Check. Medical maladies that keep the main characters on their toes (and our heartstrings thoroughly plucked)? All Creatures Great and Small brings everything fans love about Call the Midwife, with bonus adorable animals, as, instead of delivering babies, the main character takes care of the four-legged members of his hamlet as a lovable veterinarian.
Upstairs Downstairs
Written and created by Heidi Thomas, who also serves as creator and showrunner on Call the Midwife, this revival of the 1970s hit series is sure to be a hit with Downton lovers for its delicious high-class-meets-working-class drama in pre-WWII England.
Miranda
If Chummy was your favorite midwife, this sitcom starring and created by Miranda Hart, who played her, is a must for your watch list. The semi-autobiographical comedy centers on the titular Miranda, who tries to cope with dating woes, career problems, and her family, with hilarious results.
Downton Abbey
Scratch that British period drama itch with this modern classic about the Crawley family and their servants navigating the intrigues of the changing class system in the 19010s and '20s.
The Bletchley Circle
Get a dose of post-war British women taking charge in this mystery series about a group of former cryptographers from the famed WWII code-breaking operation at Bletchley Park. Though their work ended with the war, in the early 1950s, the women find themselves pulled back together as they attempt to use their skills to track down a serial killer.
London Hospital
Before the nurses of Call the Midwife served the East End, there was already plenty of (medical) drama in London's poorest neighborhood. This British series follows the travails of the doctors, nurses, and patients at the area hospital in the early 1900s.
Up the Women
Let's face it, we could all use a little more Sister Monica Joan in our lives. Judy Parfitt (who plays everybody's favorite madcap nun) trades in her wimple for a suffragette's sash in this comedy series about a 1910s crafting circle who start agitating for votes for women.
The Crown
Fans of Call the Midwife know what a profound impact the political climate of England has on the midwives of Nonnatus House. The six seasons of The Crown look at many of those same issues from a different perspective, following the royal family from Queen Elizabeth's rise to the throne in the early 1950s, moving toward the modern day. (Plus! Emerald Fennell, known to Midwife fans as Patsy, plays a young Camilla Parker Bowles in seasons 3 and 4.)
