10 products you didn't know were invented by women
Some say that behind every successful woman is a substantial amount of coffee. We can thank Melitta Bentz for giving us our delicious daily dose back in 1908. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re giving credit where credit is due, highlighting 10 products made by women.
Back in 1809, Mary Kies became the first woman in the U.S. to receive a patent, paving the way for female inventors to shape the world as we know it. Before then, women had to apply to patents in their husbands’ names due to the property laws in many states.
Many notable women have followed in Kies’s footsteps, creating ways to make our lives easier, more enjoyable and cleaner with some of their inventions. Caresse Crosby was the first person to receive a patent for the modern bra in 1914, and Leona Chalmers invented the first modern menstrual cup in 1937.
The types of women-invented products span all uses and industries. Despite popular belief that one of the most beloved board games was created by a man, it was actually Elizabeth Magie who designed and patented the earliest known version of Monopoly. Manmade? That ‘thingamabob’ you’re using every day might just be woman-made.
