2020 has been a year for social media. Ok, it was mostly because we were forced indoors for the majority of it, but our official roundup of the most-liked Instagram photos of the year has arrived.

There are now over one billion monthly active users on the app, and while lockdown has kept us firmly scrolling, some things haven't changed at all. Yeah, your top 9 is fun to look at for five minutes, but isn't snooping on celebrities that tiny bit more fun?

For example, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo firmly remains the most-followed on the app, with a respectable 244 million followers. Pop queen Ariana Grande isn't too far behind either, with 213 million.

Of course, this year hasn't come without its losses. Back in August we lost actor Chadwick Boseman, as well as Kobe Bryant back in January - both of which have been honoured hugely on social media, and reflected in this year's list of top posts.

So, without further ado, let's take a look back at the most-liked Instagram photos of 2020...

10. LeBron James

Following the unexpected death of basketball icon Kobe Bryant at the beginning of the year, best friend and fellow LA Laker, LeBron James, paid tribute to his best friend on Instagram.

"I’m heartbroken and devastated my brother," he wrote. "My heart goes to Vanessa and the kids. I promise you I’ll continue your legacy man! You mean so much to us".

The post received over 15.4 million likes.

9. Tentree

Although posted back in April 2019, sustainable clothing brand Tentree continue to do their bit for the planet, all thanks to this photo.

When the photo reached 5 million likes, the brand promised to plant half a million trees to say thank you.

It currently stands at 15.5 million likes and continues to climb, and Tentree will be planting a further 500,000 when it reaches 20 million.

8. Kylie Jenner

Despite having broken up with Travis Scott, Kylie Jenner continues to co-parent their daughter Stormi, and even posted an adorable tribute back in April for his birthday.

Sharing never-before-seen photos of the dad-and-daughter duo, the beauty mogul penned a heartfelt message to Travis showing her appreciation, and in return, earned herself a respectable 15.9 million likes.

"We went half on greatness!" she wrote. "The most beautiful, smart, loving and funny little baby. The best gift. Ok I'm crying. Love you forever!"

7. Lionel Messi

In November, the football world lost one of its legends, Diego Maradona, and players old and new came together to pay tribute.

One of those players was Lionel Messi, who shared a snap of the pair together along with a heartfelt message in Spanish.

The post currently has over 16 million likes.

6. Jennifer Aniston

One year on, and this was always destined to make the top ten. Jennifer Aniston joined Instagram last year and marked the occasion by posting a selfie with her fellow Friends co-stars.

Naturally, Jen's arrival broke the internet (sorry Kim), and she became the fastest person to ever reach one million followers. In five hours and 16 minutes to be precise.

Bravo, Jen. Now, can we get a reboot please?

5. Kylie Jenner (again)

Kylie knows a thing or two about sending the world into a frenzy. And her original post from February 2018, announcing the arrival of baby Stormi after keeping her pregnancy a secret, is still a firm Instagram favourite.

The snap of the tot gripping her mum's finger was simply captioned "Stormi Webster", and is still amassing likes despite her being almost three years old.

Surely little Stormi is the youngest person to ever receive 18.5 million likes on a photo of themselves? Goals.

4. Chadwick Boseman

Film fans were left shaken back in August of this year when actor Chadwick Boseman unexpectedly passed away following a secret health battle with cancer.

Despite being extremely sick, he still regularly attended premieres and other major events, making it even more of a shock when his family posted a portrait photo of him to his Instagram account, informing fans he had passed away.

"It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman," it read. "Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. ⁣

It continued to detail, "A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much," before noting some of his most memorable roles.

The post currently has 19.1 million likes.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo

As the most followed account on Instagram, it's pretty easy for Cristiano Ronaldo to rack up those all-important likes.

His most popular post, however, was another tribute to footballing legend Diego Maradona.

The post read in Portuguese: "Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius.

" One of the best ever. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limited, and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, Ace. You will never be forgotten."

The post gathered over 19.3 million likes in just six days.

2. XXXTentacion

XXXTentacion's last and only post before his passing back in May 2018 remains in position number two of the most-liked posts on the platform.

The post has even gained a further nine million likes since last year, and is now on 22.6 million.

1.World Record Egg

Boy, if you participated in the World Record egg back in 2019, you're about to regret it, because it's safe to say it's going to remain the number one most-liked photo on Instagram...forever.

The post has continued to break the internet, and now has over 55 million likes, smashing Kylie Jenner's pre-egg record of 18 million by a country mile.
