  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes

  • Resort Fee: No

  • Room Rate: $$

Notable Amenities

Electric vehicle charging stations, heated marble bathroom floors, complimentary hors d'oeuvres hour

Hotel Description

If you really want to get away for the weekend, book a trip to Half-Mile Farm, a luxurious country inn in Highlands, North Carolina, a popular Southern small-town getaway with a quaint main street. A sister to the town’s iconic Old Edwards Inn, this adults-only property is set on 14 acres of woodland, making it a little more of a retreat.

Admittedly, summer, when people can take advantage of the mineral pool and the lake, is high season here, but the fireplaces in some rooms draw travelers looking to hunker down for a winter night or two. (There's also a firepit on the front lawn if you prefer your flames alfresco.) Plus, the J. Henry Farmhouse Tavern, which serves farm-fresh lunch and dinner and has a lively evening bar scene, is open year-round. As for the decor in the 34 rooms, expect tastefully luxe country style (think shiplap and wrought iron beds). For more contemporary decor, book one of the Woodland Suites, which have a modern farmhouse look.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail

Why We Chose It

The Four Seasons Vail might not be a ski-in, ski-out property, but its location in town and the largest rooms in the valley make this a very worthwhile stay.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes

  • Resort Fee: Yes, 7% of room rate per night

  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Ski concierge, free ski shuttle, spa

Hotel Description

The Four Seasons Vail’s imposing main building is a looming stone chalet at the base of the mountains, but that starkness melts away as soon as you enter, thanks to extraordinarily helpful and welcoming staff. The property is a classic ski resort with a heated outdoor pool, a slew of dining and drinking options, and a relaxing spa where treatments focus on rejuvenation from the effects of the high elevation. The only thing that's missing is, well, ski slopes. The property isn't ski-in, ski-out, but it does have a slopeside ski center where you can store your gear and get some hot chocolate. The benefit of the Four Seasons’ location is its access to all the action in central Vail, just a short walk away.

There are 134 rooms in total at the hotel, and they start at an impressive 575 square feet. They’re very modern, with just hints of mountain decor, and have amenities like Nespresso machines, L'Occitane toiletries, and stone fireplaces, where you’ll want to relax as you watch the Colorado snow fall.

26,000-square-foot spa, Michelin-starred Japanese Restaurant, cigar and wine libraries

Hotel Description

The word juxtaposition is often overused, but it's perfect for the situation at the Chedi Andermatt. This is a true East-meets-West hotel, where pan-Asian influences meld with classic Alpine features. Zen-like minimalism, for instance, pervades the massive wood chalet, creating a modern look in what could have been a stereotypically rustic mountain space. The same design scheme can be found in the hotel’s 123 rooms, which all include stylish two-sided or circular fireplaces. This East-West duality is also found in the 26,000-square-foot-spa, where Ottoman baths meet Balinese massage. Finally, there's the cuisine. The Chedi’s several eateries cover many European and Asian styles, with the Michelin-starred Japanese Restaurant being a particular highlight.

The Greenwich Hotel

Why We Chose It

It's hard to believe a New York City hotel has working in-room fireplaces, but the Greenwich is full of surprises.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes

  • Resort Fee: No

  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Indoor pool, Savoir beds, spa

Hotel Description

There's a feeling of subdued glamour at the Greenwich Hotel, where ultra-plush materials like Carrara marble and Tibetan silk are used with perfect restraint. The combination makes the hotel feel both intimidating and laid-back at the same time. Not all of the 88 rooms have fireplaces. In fact, just five do — the three penthouses and the two Fireplace Corner Suites — but if you can nab one, an unforgettable urban winter escape awaits. If money is no object, book the $18,000-per-night TriBeCa Penthouse, which has a decor scheme inspired by the Japanese wabi aesthetic and copious outdoor space with lush greenery. The hotel’s public spaces are equally alluring, particularly the spa with an indoor pool and the Italian restaurant Locanda Verde.

The Captain’s House Inn

Why We Chose It

This bucolic (and historic) inn on Cape Cod has fireplaces in every room, making it the perfect place to spend a romantic winter weekend.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes

  • Resort Fee: No

  • Room Rate: $$

Notable Amenities

High tea, free parking, complimentary in-room snacks and drinks

Hotel Description

Visiting a beach destination in winter might seem backward, but it makes perfect sense when you stay at one of the most charming inns on Cape Cod, where each of the 16 rooms has a gas or wood-burning fireplace. This adults-only property in Chatham comprises four buildings: a Greek Revival home Captain Hiram Harding had built for his wife, Lydia, in 1839; a carriage house; converted stables; and the 200-year-old “Captain's Cottage.”

Each room is decorated quite traditionally — florals and lace abound. While it's tempting to stay cozied up in your room for the duration of your stay, we do recommend emerging for breakfast and afternoon tea, both of which are complimentary. You can also upgrade your afternoon tea service to high tea, which adds finger sandwiches and cakes to the mix.

Pueblo Bonito Bed and Breakfast Inn

Why We Chose It

This affordable hotel in the heart of Santa Fe provides a slightly different kind of fireplace experience: a kiva.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes

  • Resort Fee: No

  • Room Rate: $

Notable Amenities

Complimentary breakfast, free parking

Hotel Description

For an authentic and affordable Southwestern stay, book a room at Pueblo Bonito, located just a few blocks from Santa Fe Plaza. The 19 rooms in the century-old adobe structure are filled with traditional design elements, from natural wood viga rafters to colorful geometrically patterned textiles. Perhaps most importantly, all but one feature a kiva, a traditional Puebloan fireplace. (There’s a slight charge to use these wood-burning fireplaces.) Beyond the design, a major highlight of this property is its hearty breakfasts, which include homemade tamales.

Final Verdict

The Wickaninnish Inn draws guests for its wild weather-watching in the wintertime. As storms lash the British Columbia coast, you can light a fire and marvel at nature's fury from the comfort of your room. The hotel also has an exceptional fine-dining restaurant that's apt to make you stay on the property for your whole visit. If you'd like a hotel where the action is on the slopes, pick somewhere like the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail or the Chedi Andermatt. Or go in the opposite direction entirely with a stay at the Greenwich Hotel in New York, where you can enjoy the magic of winter in the city.

Know Before You Go

  • When searching for a room with a fireplace, consider whether you'd like one that’s gas or wood-burning; the latter might need to be set up by hotel staff. (Most hotels have gas fireplaces in guest rooms for safety.)

  • Don't leave a fire burning in your fireplace when you leave the room.

  • Follow general fire safety protocols, including knowing the location of the nearest fire extinguisher.

How We Chose These Hotels

We evaluated more than 50 hotels with fireplaces before choosing the best across a range of categories. Our primary focus was to curate a diverse selection of properties. In the course of research, we considered various elements, such as the property’s location, reputation, quality of service, design, price range, and notable amenities like meal inclusions, spas, and pools. In determining this list, we evaluated numerous customer reviews, incorporated our own experiences, and considered whether the property has collected any accolades in recent years.
