The 10 Best Handmade Stores on Amazon

·8 min read

Shopping for handmade products on Amazon can be like drinking from a firehose: completely overwhelming and not very effective in satisfying your specific need. Luckily, Amazon Handmade has been around for over five years now and boasts a space for customers to shop genuine, handcrafted goods across a variety of categories from verified makers. And while there are many success stories and over 100 makers with revenues in the millions, the SKUs have exploded to include the likes of a Harry Styles air freshener for your car and every iteration of Ostomy bag cover you can imagine.

In other words, it’s become difficult for consumers to sift through the junk and find tasteful, limited edition handmade products. That’s why we asked Hearth Co, an online curator with a focus on provenance and style, to select ten of the best handmade stores on Amazon, and take the guesswork out of it for you.

1. Zohar Shaham Ceramics

One of the more established handmade stores on Amazon Handmade, Zohar Shaham Ceramics have tens of beautiful designs to choose from that will ship within 2 to 5 weeks. The studio specializes in minimalist-handmade ceramic tableware and home décor and all items are made from natural clay, then thrown on the potter’s wheel, hand colored and glazed.

Founder Zohar says her home in Israel is a lovely small village surrounded by natural beauty. “I use lead-free glazing, which makes each piece food-safe. I use the highest quality materials and multiple burns to create long lasting pieces that you can use repeatedly and even pass along as a family keepsake.”

Editor’s picks are these ceramic matcha tea bowls and this turquoise glazed natural clay ramen bowl.

2. Independent Reign

The story behind this handmade bag label is so heartwarming. Ten years ago, the designer and maker found herself drawn into a store in Hong Kong that sold ribbons, trimmings and sequins in hundreds of different colors. She went about teaching herself to sew… “With an $80 home sewing machine and a new challenge on my hands, hours flew by like minutes. I rediscovered a creative spirit that I had somewhat knowingly pushed aside along the way,” she says. Fast forward to now and she takes care of all aspects of production by hand in her studio in NYC. Her range includes beach bags, crossbody purses, totes, leather wristlets all with a simple, casual vibe, and next-level attention to detail and quality that you can really just feel.

Editor’s pick is the medium bucket bag. Also this linen wristlet that works well as a wallet or makeup bag.

3. so linen!

Ah linen..how we love you. Not just because you are a renewable resource, both biodegradable and recyclable, but because you keep us cool in the heat, and insulate from the cold, giving us the perfect night’s sleep all year round. So linen! sells fifty pages of gorgeous linen products on its Amazon Handmade store, but will also customize just about anything, with an average production time of 15 days. The linen is stonewashed (softened, pre-shrunk, medium weight) and all of the products are designed and hand sewn with love in Warsaw, Poland and shipped worldwide, with a 30-day return policy.

Editor’s picks are this gray-striped summer linen bedspread, and this cute natural linen hair turban.

4. Sara Patino Jewellery

Jewelry is one of the most over-subscribed categories on Amazon Handmade, and, fun fact, California, Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are among the top states with the highest population of makers. Not this one though! Sara is from St Louis Missouri, but it is her connection to Colombia, South America, that has informed her journey as an artisan. “As a kid, at the end of my trips [to Colombia] I’d come home with handmade purses, belts and jewelry. This was my first appreciation of the joy in handmade accessories; they come from the earth, and are made with intention by actual people!” Sara Patino’s collection is made for women who take a mindful approach to life. Her unique, simple and original designs are made with kindness to the earth using recycled gold and silver, and ethically sourced stones.

Editor’s pick: the delicate Petal Pearl Earrings.

5. Maison D’Hermine

Maison D’Hermine slides across the line into the handmade store by virtue of the designs delicately hand painted using centuries’ old watercolor techniques. Their signature motifs are laid out by designers in Europe and printed in rich color on 100% cotton fabric in India. Since many of the designs are seasonally-inspired and often timeless, the table linen has the benefit of being re-used many years over. Honestly, as long as Aunt Margaret doesn’t spill too much claret or try to iron these on a high setting, the reinforced stitching and securely-caught corners mean this hard-wearing drapery can be passed on generationally.

Editor’s picks are this Limoncello 100% cotton tablecloth, and this French toile style 100% cotton tablecloth.

6. Agnoulita Hats

Life is too short for anything less than a bespoke hat. Agnoulita Hats is that old-school family business (85 years and three generations of hatmakers) that you feel you can entrust with the brief. In their atelier in Piraeus, Greece, there are no standard shapes or mass-producing hydraulic hat presses. They use original blocks and the same techniques to create hats for people all over the world who appreciate genuine quality and artisanship. Their range includes all the classics as well as popular styles. Think: The Bolero, The Clubber, The Mojave. And for the hat body they offer endless color combinations in wool felt, rabbit and hare fur felt, velour, peach bloom suede, melange (flecked), beaver and some of the most beautiful Milan straws. You can read about the full production process here.

Editor’s pick (and for sure Celine Dion’s too) is this Rabbit Fur Felt Fedora.

7. Park & Madison

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and that is true of the Park & Madison story. Frustrated with the lack of quality, and the soot and smoke produced by many store-bought candles that were leaving a black film on their white apartment walls, co-owners Jenn and Nolan set about experimenting with different types of wax and essential oil blends. After a year of research and development, they finally had a soy wax candle with a clean burn. That day was back in 2014 in East Harlem, NY. The company continues to use all natural soy wax and unique blends of essential and phthalate-free fragrance oil in its products. The candles are made in small batches, now poured in both Charleston and Philadelphia.

Editor’s pick is this Mulled Cider Candle, though it’s definitely worth checking out the Lavendar Rosemary Candle if you're searching for a more light and refreshing scent.

8. Freefille

No handmade list would be complete without macrame! Freefille creates one-of-a-kind macrame wall hangings and plant hangers, each with a modern twist to the nostalgic ‘70’s macrame. They’re made with high quality chemical-free cotton rope sourced locally in Canada. Each piece is an original work of art using different types of knots, material and colors that look equally amazing at home, in retail and office spaces. The magical installation featured above by founder and fabricator, Isabel, hangs in an Ontario restaurant.

Editor’s pick is the Large Macrame Plant Hanger (and also the fact you can customize your pop of color!)

9. Berberology

The burning question is whether a Beni Ouarain rug is still exotic and desirable when you can buy it on Amazon for $500 instead of braving the markets of Marrakech (or snatching a bargain from the warehouse in Brooklyn). If the answer is yes and this is an aesthetic you seek, Berberology does appear to be the low-cost gateway to a range of Morrocan hand-woven rugs, pom pom blankets, kilim poufs and cactus silk cushions. It is a small weaving and textile business with a handful of Berber artisans and tailors honing their craft in the high Atlas mountains. At face value the rugs look really beautiful and there is a wide range of designs and sizes available to order.

Editor’s picks are the 22x22” Cactus Silk Cushion Cover, and the Rust Cactus Silk Area Rug though it really would be hard to pick just one!

10. WoodStoreGifts

It’s surprisingly hard to come across handmade wooden toys when you need them. Yet they’re a wonderful item to gift young families and so much nicer to receive than the plastic crap the toy shops are full of. In this case, the goods are coming all the way from Moscow, Russia and, while there do seem to be a few delivery issues noted in the reviews, customers seem mostly overjoyed with the quality craftsmanship. There are almost 150 wooden toys to choose from in this Amazon store, all of them handcrafted out of natural, durable and eco-friendly materials that are safe for children and the environment. Toys are made from beechwood, amaranth, harewood, basswood, oak, and finished with linseed oil.

Editor’s picks are the Handmade Wood Toy Log Truck and the Mushroom Glade Educational Toy.
