The #1 Movie on Rotten Tomatoes Is a Massive Hit with Critics (& We Can See Why)

Move over, Devil All the Time and The Take. Rotten Tomatoes just released a list of today’s top ranked movies, and the number one pick received a near-perfect rating.

Introducing Miss Juneteenth, a drama that’s getting loads of positive buzz after receiving a 99 percent score on the Tomatometer.

The movie tells the story of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), a single mother living in Fort Worth, Texas. As the former winner of the local Miss Juneteenth pageant, Turquoise can’t wait for her daughter to follow in her footsteps.

As you can imagine, 15-year-old Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) is less than thrilled about her mother’s role as a stage mom. Still, she sucks it up and joins the competition as a contestant.

We don’t want to spoil the ending, but you should know that the movie offers several valuable lessons about family. Not to mention, the pageant is inspired by the titular holiday, which only increases our curiosity.

In addition to Beharie and Chikaeze, Miss Juneteenth also stars Kendrick Sampson (Ronnie), Liz Mikel (Betty Ray), Marcus Mauldin (Wayman), Jaime Matthis (Quantavious), Lori Hayes (Charlotte), Akron Watson (Bacon) Phyllis Cicero (Mrs. Washington) and Lisha Hackney (Clarissa).

The movie was directed and written by Channing Godfrey Peoples (Queen Sugar). Toby Halbrooks (A Ghost Story), Tim Headington (In the Land of Blood and Honey), Jeanie Igoe (Moonlight), James M. Johnston (The Green Knight), Theresa Page (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Neil Creque Williams (David’s Reverie) served as executive producers.

Although Miss Juneteenth originally premiered at Sundance earlier this year, it’s now available on Amazon Prime. *Adds to streaming queue*
