Jay Leno on fast cars, the new late night lineup and cruisin' with Joe Biden
By Kaye Foley
Jay Leno is back in the driver’s seat with the second season of his show on CNBC, “Jay Leno’s Garage.” His fascination with all things automotive and his easy on-screen charm made the first season of the series the most watched in the network’s history.
The former host of “The Tonight Show” sat down with Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric to talk about his massive vehicle collection (150 cars, 117 motorcycles), his interminable stand-up career and the state of late night.
“Jay Leno’s Garage” — which is also the name of a YouTube series hosted by Leno that gets a bit more technical — is a different kind of show, all about the love of the automobile.
“I watch a lot of the car shows … and they either buy a car and then sell it, or they fix it up in a week,” Leno said. “We wanted to find more [of] the passion … the fun stories.”
The perfect car for every occasion
Leno retired from “The Tonight Show” in 2014 after 22 years in late night. On what he misses most, he said, “The fun part was, something happens in the news … I would joke about it that night. I like the idea of writing jokes, writing jokes, [and then] pencils down.”
