Inside James Corden’s 'Late Late Show,' Carpool Karaoke and the Tonys

By Kaye Foley

“The Late Late Show” host and king of Carpool Karaoke, James Corden sat down with Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric at the popular L.A. restaurant Animal to talk about his late-night gig, his viral success, and the Tony Awards.

“I never thought for a second that we would hit the ground running as fast as we did,” said Corden. “I’m just relieved that people like it.”

‘The Late Late Show’: One year later

Corden’s “Late Late Show” launched last March and has had big online success with viral sketches like a “riff-off” with Anna Kendrick, “speed-acting” with Tom Hanks, and the massively popular Carpool Karaoke.

“There’s something very joyful about seeing a megastar sing their hits in the very same place that we sing them,” said Corden about singing in the car with celebs like Adele, Stevie Wonder, and Justin Bieber. “It’s a very humanizing place.”

The show’s Carpool Karaoke video with Adele has had over 71 million views and is the most-watched late-night show YouTube clip ever.

Hosting the Tony Awards

In February, Corden was tapped to host the 70th annual Tony Awards broadcast on CBS this summer.

“I felt unbelievably lucky and fortunate both times I’ve worked on Broadway,” he said. “To be asked to host its biggest night is … an absolute honor. I’m going to sure try my best to make it a really great show.”
