Fifth GOP Debate Post Show

After a spirited fifth debate between the GOP’s 2016 presidential hopefuls vying for their party’s nomination, Yahoo Global Anchor Katie Couric lead a recap and analysis discussion featuring political commentator and foreign policy analyst Rula Jebreal, Random House Executive Editor Jon Meacham, and Senior Political Columnist for the National Journal Ron Fournier. Former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center also joined the conversation.

The panel discussed the clashes of the night between Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz as well as Donald Trump and Jeb Bush. In regards to Bush, Fournier said, “For the first time he saw someone get under Trump’s skin.” Meacham thought that Governor Chris Christie had the best night and Cruz and Rubio came off as “bickering senators.”

They also discussed the candidate’s stances on foreign policy and national security, which was the focus of the night. Jebreal worried about the impact the debate on the stage would have on the American Muslim community. She said: “I think every American Muslim is thinking if almost any of these guys wins, they would have to pack and leave.”

Finally, Meacham told Couric: “This Republican stage is moving ever rightward in a country that is at least purple.”
