Danny DeVito’s new film, working with his kids, and ‘feeling the ‘Bern’

Danny DeVito’s latest project is a change of pace from many of the big-budget movies he has become famous for.

He stars in and directs “Curmudgeons,” a short film he produced with his son, Jake, and daughter Lucy, who also stars with her father. It had its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, and it is dedicated to the late David Margulies, who plays one of the main characters.

Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric spoke to DeVito and his children about what drew them to the film.

“The power and the positivity of the piece — and socially what it represented,” Jake said.

“It was a labor of love. Everybody who was there wanted to be there,” Lucy told Couric.

When he is not acting, directing or producing, DeVito is “Berning.” The ardent Bernie Sanders supporter has been on the stump for the candidate in recent weeks and has been making a strong case for voters in New York to come out and vote in the state’s crucial primary contest.

“I feel like people need to get involved, look at the issues, listen to the candidates, but vote — you can’t just sit back; you have to take a stand, and my stand is absolutely for Bernie.”

DeVito’s show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has just been picked up for a 13th and 14th season. The show launched DeVito’s notorious #trollfoot on Twitter. DeVito plays the morally bankrupt Frank Reynolds and attributes the show’s lasting success to the great writing.

Jake DeVito is hoping “Curmudgeons” will be as well received.

“It’s the kind of film that hits people in a lot of different ways, and some people respond a lot more to the humor, and some people get a lot more emotional about it — but it’s all been positive.”
