Prosecutors Convene Grand Jury That Could Weigh Potential Trump Charges: Reports

Prosecutors in New York have convened a special grand jury that may hear evidence against former President Donald Trump and potentially decide whether he will face charges, The Washington Post first reported Tuesday.

Trump and his businesses have been under investigation in the state for more than two years by the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

Jurors were convened “recently,” the Post said, citing two people familiar with the probe, and will be expected to sit three days a week for six months.

Prosecutors have not yet announced whether or not they will bring charges. But if they do, the special grand jury is expected to hear the evidence for them and decide whether to indict the former president, according to the Post and ABC News, which also confirmed that the jury has been convened.

“This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American history,” Trump wrote in a statement issued on his website Tuesday night. “This is purely political, and an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election, and it’s being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors.”

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance finally got ahold of Trump’s tax returns and related financial documents earlier this year following a Supreme Court decision granting access to millions of pages of documents.

Vance has since been joined by New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose office expanded a civil investigation into Trump’s conduct to include potential criminal acts. The lead prosecutors are both Democrats.

Among the issues investigators are looking into is whether Trump improperly inflated the value of his assets to take out loans, and improperly deflated their value when it came time to file his taxes. A series of bombshell New York Times reports that outlined how Trump and his associates allegedly avoided paying tax successfully for years reignited public calls for investigation.

Trump is currently facing one other criminal investigation by a county prosecutor’s office in Georgia, where he attempted to pressure state leaders to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in his favor.
