New Belgium Brewing Company is expanding its Fort Collins bottling hall to add in a 16,000-square-foot can line due to unexpected high can sales.

Like many craft brews, New Belgium has embraced the can. They started canning their Fat Tire beer in 2008 then expanded to Sunshine Wheat and Ranger IPA due to high sales of the canned beer, according to The Denver Post.

Bryan Simpson, New Belgium spokesperson said to The Coloradoan that New Belgium decided to go into the canning because the metals that go into cans are more sustainable and lighter than glass bottles. 9News reports that New Belgium also says the cans give beer drinkers a more durable and portable option to take their beer to a swimming pool or other area that doesn't allow bottles.

The Coloradoan reports that the brewery's new canning system will enable the brewery to fill 360 cans per minute, increasing their canning production volume by six times.
