Modern Haunted Houses Require Insurance, Drug Tests For Entry

SUMMERTOWN, Tenn. (AP) — A haunted house that promises an extreme experience that can last up to 10 hours requires participants be medically cleared by a doctor and sign a 40-page waiver.

The McKamey Manor experiences in Summertown, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama, also require visitors be at least 18, insured, and pass a background check and drug test.

WFLA-TV reports that owner Russ McKamey offers thousands of dollars to anyone who completes the tour, but says no one ever has. He records each tour on video — for his own protection he says — and then posts them online, showing them quitting in humiliation.

It’s costs nearly nothing to enter: Just a bag of dog food. The website warns of physically demanding environments, but McKamey says the manor is a mental game.

House of Restless Spirits

The House of Restless Spirits was built in 1922 for local sea merchant Nathaniel Jacks, who was forced to bury his friends and relatives, including his wife and two children, in the backyard after an influenza outbreak ravaged the community. Jacks returned to the sea after this tragedy and was never seen or heard from again. The house has been empty since his departure. Creepy, right? Come see for yourself on Halloween weekend when this Haunted House opens its doors to the public. October 29-31, 7pm - 11pm Saturday, 7pm - 10pm Sunday and Monday, free 1008 Euclid Street, at Washington Avenue, Santa Monica, (houseofrestlessspirits.com) Photo via House of Restless Spirits

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

One of Los Angeles' biggest and most terrifying Halloween events will happen in Griffith Park's old zoo. Here, a haunted hayride will carry brave thrill seekers through the old cages and animal habitats, which will be populated by creepy dolls and demented clowns, in accordance with this year's theme, "through the eyes of a child." There will also be less-scary Halloween maze and carnival for children under ten and faint of heart adults. October 7-31, Thursday-Sunday, hours vary, $25-$35 Griffith Park Old Zoo, 4730 Crystal Springs Avenue, (losangeleshauntedhayride.com) Photo via Facebook: Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Ghost Ship

From the creators of the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride comes a trip of terror on the high seas, (or, you know, the South Bay). This 75 minute haunted sail features three levels of terror, as brave seafarers wander the spooky ship/"floating psych ward" and encounter ghastly displays of eletro shock therapy, wicked hydrotherapy and an "interactive execution experience." The scariest part is that you're stuck on the boat until the captain decides to head back to shore. If he decides to head back to shore. October 14-15, 21-22, 28-29, $59 2901 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach, (ghostship.com) Photo via Facebook: Ghost Ship

Nightmare

This event at the Pomona Fairplex features five haunted mazes with themes including Wicked Wild West, (think creepy cowboys and a ghost town), Haunted Gypsy Camp (imagine a demented gypsy with a haunted crystal ball), Transylvania Terror (vampires), Circus of Freaks (read: psychotic sideshow performers) and Zombies (enough said). This all sounds...horribly scary, and is thus not recommended for children under 13 or for anyone who gets anxious just reading these descriptions. October 14-15, 21-22, 28-31, 7pm - 11pm, $15 1101 West McKinley Avenue, at Fairplex Drive, Pomona, (fairplex.com) Photo via Flickr: Fairplex

Eternal Rest Cemetery

This Venice cemetery will invoke the spirits of its permanent residents for a haunted Halloween evening featuring tours of the graveyard and morgue. Don't be surprised if you stumble over a few un-dead bodies, and feel free to scream bloody murder. October 31, sunset - 11pm 414 Rose Avenue, at 4th Avenue, Venice, (venicehauntedhouse.com) Photo By Art Gray, via Facebook: Venice Haunted House

Old Town Haunt

Beneath Pasadena's historic First National Bank building lies a network of tunnels and catacombs that date back to the eighteenth century. A suspiciously high number of souls have met their unfortunate fates in this building through seeming accidents, (slipping down the stairs, electrocution, construction site collapses), that hint at a more malevolent force at play. This underground network of passageways will be open to the public for tours. Enter at your own risk. Seriously. October 7-8, 14-16, 20-23, 26-31, hours vary, $15-$17 20 North Raymond Street, at Colorado, Pasadena, (oldtownhaunt.com)
