Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), the longest serving member of Congress at the age of 88, was admitted to George Washington University Hospital for observation "as a precaution," his office said on Friday.
The dean of the House, who is retiring at the end of this year, is currently resting and comfortable. Dingell cast his last vote in Congress on Thursday night, in favor of a massive spending package that would keep government funded until next September. The 30-term congressman posed for photos with his colleagues after he cast the vote, and received a large round of applause.
“Let me add my words of congratulations to our good friend John Dingell, whose been a mentor to members of both sides of the aisle and has carried more institutional history than anyone here,” Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Thursday. “My job tonight is to say, ‘Thank you, and Merry Christmas.’”
