Former Denmark Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen wondered if the idea was an out-of-season April Fool’s Day joke. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow cracked that Trump would turn Greenland into a golf course once the glaciers melted due to climate change. And the reports caused #Greenland to trend on Twitter, where the plan received given a frosty reception from Trump’s critics:
Trump wants to buy #Greenland? Let’s make him find it on a map first.

Before we buy Greenland we should take care of Puerto Rico.

I will be disappointed if we determine that there *wasn't* an episode of The Simpsons about this. Has to have been, right?https://t.co/ewlxaNbF7e

Honored sirs, I am PRINCE KIELSEN and I am contacting you with exciting opportunity. I recently inherited an island but need a small amount of cash. Send a money order for $600,000,000 to my account and I will give you “Greenland.”

President Obama: He actually said he wants to buy Greenland.
Hillary Clinton: Can he even find it on a map?
Obama: Nope. 😂
Both: 🤣😂 pic.twitter.com/8434J1qsbt

A country full of Danes is going to starting waking up in 3-4 hours and honestly I’m not sure they’re ready for the news cycle that awaits them.

Very good chance Trump saw how big Greenland was on a map, had never heard of it before, said he wanted to buy it and has zero idea what’s going on with the environment there.

If Donald Trump thinks Greenland is for sale, I can't wait to see what he does with the next email he gets from a Nigerian spammer.

Greenland. This is what happens when Melania asks her husband to buy some Danish.

IT’S CALLED GREENLAND BUT IT’S ACTUALLY COVERED IN ICE, UNLIKE ICELAND WHICH IS ACTUALLY VERY GREEN. ANYWAY, I’M GOING TO BUY IT pic.twitter.com/sD8apRzUb0

Why spend money on American’s healthcare when you can...buy Greenland!
Why improve our public schools when you can...buy Greenland!
Why rebuild our crumbling infrastructure when you can...buy Greenland!
This presidency has exploded into parody. It is beyond insane.

We joke now, but in six months buying Greenland will be a litmus test on the right.
— Brendan Buck (@BrendanBuck) August 15, 2019
I guarantee Trump believes Greenland is a hell of a lot bigger than it really is. There is a very slim chance he understands that Mercator maps inflate landmasses that are close to the poles.#Denmark #Greenland pic.twitter.com/FnQ3dLkQvT

Greenland isn't as large as most Americans think.
Algeria (919,600 mi²) is larger than Greenland (836,300 mi²) though most Americans couldn't tell you that because of how maps are depicted in this country:
