Would You Use The Same Thing To Clean Your Teeth And Your Yoga Mat?

There are multitasking products (like the depuffing undereye concealer you love, or the styling products that tame frizz while adding volume and bounce), and then there are extreme overachievers. Case in point: Castile soaps. These organic, vegan, all-good-things, oil-based soaps have been around for centuries, cleaning everything from teeth to countertops. While I’m probably not going to throw out my toothpaste, deodorant, or face wash, I have swapped some household chemical cleaners for Castile soaps like Dr. Bronner’s and Acure Argan Oil Castile Soaps. Here, ten ways to put Castile soaps to work.

As toothpaste: Add one drop (of a peppermint-scented formula, like Acure’s Peppermint) to your toothbrush. Brush away.

As breath freshener: Combine two drops of a peppermint formula with three tablespoons of water and keep the mixture in a spray bottle to mist in your mouth for a quick midday refresh.

As mouthwash: Add one drop to a small cup of water, then swish, gargle, and rinse.

As shampoo: Mix one tablespoon of Castile soap with one tablespoon of coconut milk and massage into your hair. Then rinse (duh!).

As face wash (and makeup remover): Put three drops of Castile soap (we love Dr. Bronner’s Tea Tree Pure Castile soap for this) in the palm of your hand and gently massage onto the face with warm water. Watch makeup and grime from the day melt away.

For shaving: Apply several drops to wet hands and work up a lather. Then apply to the desired area before shaving.

To clear congestion: Add one drop of Castile soap to a bowl of steaming water and breathe in the vapor.

For laundry: Pour half a cup of Castile soap over a large load and add half a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. Clean clothes, zero toxins.

As all-purpose cleaner: For everything from your countertop to your yoga mat. Add one cup of white vinegar and one third of a cup of Castile soap to a gallon of water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle for surface cleaning or dump it into a large bucket to mop the floor.

As dish soap: Create a solution of one part Castile soap and ten parts water, then squirt it on a sponge or scrub brush and wash away.
