What’s In My Gym Bag: Yahoo Health Editor-in-Chief Michele Promaulayko

We’re taking a peek inside our favorite health and fitness experts’ gym bags to uncover their must-have gear and favorite products. 

Name: Michele Promaulayko, Editor-in-Chief of Yahoo Health

My workout: Twice a week, I work out at The Madison Square Club, owned by renowned trainer and wellness expert, David Kirsch. I love the environment there — and the trainers are always coming up with creative moves, like this ab exercise David did with Jennifer Lopez. Innovation keeps things fun and changes your body.

In addition, I’ll try other workouts around the city — all part of the job. I am really inspired by my friend Anna Kaiser (of AKT inMotion) and by Taryn Toomey, founder of the celeb-frequented The Class. But as I wrote about in this Instagram post, I am cardio-challenged. I’m working on that.

What’s in my gym bag:

  1. The pink nubby thing is my GRID mini foam roller from Trigger Point. It’s travel-friendly and awesome for hydrating muscle tissue and increasing mobility before a workout.

  2. My favorite thing to do is to strength train (see aforementioned comment on cardio aversion). These gloves from Giro (technically for cycling) keep me from getting man hands. No offense, guys, but calluses are not cute. 

  3. This Fitbit Flex is a constant companion. Research shows that wearing a fitness tracker actually does motivate you to move more. Just ask Yahoo Tech’s David Pogue who tested 22 trackers to see which was best. 

  4. Research also shows that wearing pretty gym clothes benefits your workout. OK, I made that up, but I’m sure if a study was conducted, it would confirm my hypothesis. And anecdotal evidence bears this out. I dig the sports bras from Under Armor (the brand also makes my gym bag). And I love this loose-fitting, sweat-wicking, watercolor-inspired tank top from Asics.

  5. Yes To wipes keep me smelling fresh —wouldn’t want to offend my iron-pumping neighbors. 

  6. On the occasions that I do cardio, it’s usually in short bursts on a mini-trampoline or using a jump rope. It’s so easy to throw the jump rope in your bag. The mini-tramp, not so much. 

  7. The TRX Home Suspension Trainer is a genius, versatile piece of equipment. You can use it to work any body part using just your body weight. 

  8. Post-workout, I like to sip on David Kirsch Wellness Muscle Restore. Its main ingredient is L-Glutamine, an amino acid that helps with lean muscle growth and recovery. I sometimes mix it with Harvest Bay coconut water for an extra electrolyte boost.
