Imagine that you’re walking down a beach while wearing a belt, and attached to that belt are several huge anchors.

Now, try to keep walking.

Doesn’t it seem like this would be a hard thing to do? Carrying anger and resentment toward experiences and people in your past is the same thing. Only by letting go the past are you able to move forward.

That’s the wisdom shared by New York Times bestselling author Jack Canfield, the man behind the renowned Chicken Soup For The Soul series, who also wrote a number of other books on self-improvement, positive mindset, and success, including the landmark book The Success Principles

The key to letting go of the hurt from past experiences is forgiveness, Canfield says. But a lot of us don’t know how to do it. Here are some steps you can take to releasing your anchors and walking free.

  1. Own your anger.

  2. Take responsibility.

  3. Explain what you want.

  4. Express forgiveness.

We have to go through these steps in order to let the negative things go. Can you imagine what your life would look like if you didn’t have your past holding you back?
