What Dreams About Your Lover Really Mean

An argument with one’s significant other in a dream tends to be followed by (but not preceded by) a disagreement while awake, according to a two-week study of 61 volunteers led by Dylan F. Selterman, a psychology lecturer at the University of Maryland. Dreaming about their own infidelity made people feel less affectionate in their waking hours, but dreaming of a partner’s infidelity didn’t have this effect. Feeling jealous of a partner in dreams led to conflict only for the couples who had been found to feel less satisfied by and less invested in their relationship; dreaming of sex with one’s partner increased intimacy the next day only for the couples who already had a healthy relationship. “Chronic bad dreams about one’s partner could be a sign of a deteriorating relationship or an insecure personality,” Selterman says.
