Breakfast Inspiration: Skip the Fruit and Start Your Day With Some Fat, Instead

My typical morning starts with coffee and a bowl of fruit-topped oatmeal with almond milk. Healthy, right? Wrong. Well, sort of.

Oatmeal and fruit contain fiber and some nutrients, but just like cereal, they quickly turn into blood sugar in our system. That’s why I feel great at 9 A.M., start to crash by 11 A.M., and find myself hangry by noon.

It turns out, I’ve been eating the wrong breakfast all along. According to Be Well founder and nutritionist Kelly LeVeque, the best way to start the day is to eat a little bit of protein and…some fat.

Yes, fat! But only enough to help you feel full and keep your energy from one meal to the next.

“Aiming for 20 grams of protein at each meal and a couple tablespoons of fat is a good baseline,” she says.

If you’re not sure what kind of fat to look for, LeVeque points her clients to the healthy stuff you get from food like avocados, nut butters, egg yolks, coconut oil, and fish—like salmon and sardines.

She adds, “All-star breakfasts include a veggie omelet with avocado or a chia and flax meal pudding with collagen.”

And even if you’re the type of person who can only stomach a cup of coffee to start your day, LeVeque has a fat suggestion for you too.

“Blend a tablespoon of coconut oil into your morning brew to help get your body going with healthy fat instead of a sugar-centric nonfat latte or a calorie-conscious almond-milk latte.”

On a diet? She says this type of meal is especially for you. After all, counting calories will only backfire and make you eat more later in the day, causing the opposite effect of what you desire.

“Learning to balance blood sugar and understanding how food is metabolized in your body is the best way to maintain weight without counting,” she says. “We believe in educating our clients, so they can eat well and be well for life no matter what fad or diet is popular at the time.”
