A U.S. Navy warship fired warning shots at three small Iranian speedboats that came within 70 yards of it and a Coast Guard cutter operating in international waters in the Persian Gulf on Monday, according to the U.S. Navy. An earlier incident on April 2 marked the first time in more than a year that Iranian vessels have harassed American ships in the area. The incident Monday night occurred as three Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) speedboats approached the U.S. Navy patrol craft USS Firebolt and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Baranoff operating in the northern Persian Gulf.

A Texas appeals court is mulling whether to throw out the murder conviction of Amber Guyger for the 2018 killing of Botham Jean after the former Dallas police officer's attorney argued on Tuesday that she was acting in self-defense when she accidentally entered the wrong apartment and thought she was confronting an intruder. An attorney for Guyger, who is serving a 10-year prison sentence, argued before the Court of Appeals in the Fifth District of Texas in Dallas that Guyger should be acquitted of murder. Defense attorney Michael Mowla asked the three-judge panel to resentence Guyger on the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide if it decides not to grant her a full acquittal.
After migration at the southern border skyrocketed and became a major crisis for the Biden administration, the Harris County, Texas, sheriff has been nominated to become director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Ed Gonzalez, a Democrat, was re-elected for a second term as sheriff in 2020 but will now move into the Biden administration to tackle a major challenge. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that announcing Gonzalez's nomination Tuesday shows it was a "priority."
As the world has seen images of migrant children being dropped over the border or left for dead, the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday announced an effort to prevent transnational crime organizations from smuggling migrants across the border. DHS said "Operation Sentinel" will be focused not only on cutting off transnational crime organizations funding, but on the actual operations of smuggling. "We know all too well that these organizations put profit over human life with devastating consequences," DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters on a conference call.
More women than men say they are worse off financially now one year into the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new ABC News-Washington Post poll. A quarter of women polled say their family's financial situation is worse today than before the pandemic-related shutdowns of schools and offices began in March 2020, compared to 18% of men, according to the poll, released this week. Women and people of color were most likely to say they are financially worse off today than before the pandemic began, according to the survey, produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates.
As the novel coronavirus pandemic spread across the country last year, Rockhurst University in Kansas City faced an unprecedented financial crisis. After the university refunded more than $2 million in room and board expenses for last year's spring semester, the school continued to suffer significant financial losses and added expenses related to the virus. Despite losses in the millions, they were hopeful that the university would recover some of what it lost because it had purchased an "all risks" insurance policy from FM Global that included specific coverage for losses due to "communicable diseases."
President Joe Biden, speaking outdoors without a mask and touting what he called the "stunning progress" made in the fight against COVID-19, on Tuesday echoed new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance that fully vaccinated Americans can now go without masks when outside in many cases. "Starting today, if you're fully vaccinated, and you're outdoors ... and not in a big crowd, you no longer need to wear a mask," Biden said, speaking to reporters on the White House grounds on a sunny spring afternoon. Biden emphasized that some activities are safer than others, but said that the CDC's decision is in keeping with the science.

A New Hampshire cop is being investigated for allegedly posting a TikTok video that mocked recent criticism of police tactics. Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski released a statement Monday saying the department is aware of a TikTok video created by a uniformed officer, "made apparently while on duty." The clip, obtained by CBS affiliate WBZ-TV, showed an officer in uniform, in what appeared to be a police cruiser, pretending to respond to calls and asking an individual not stab people as lighthearted music played in the background, seemingly poking fun at the idea of officers taking a non-confrontational approach.
The federal government is delaying the deadline for the REAL ID enforcement for a second time. Every domestic air traveler 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card, state-issued enhanced driver's license or another TSA-acceptable form of identification beginning on May 3, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday. "The pandemic has significantly impacted states’ ability to issue REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards, with many driver’s licensing agencies still operating at limited capacity," the release states.

The White House said it's part of what it's calling the "Getting America Back on Track Tour," where Biden will likely be pitching his $2 trillion infrastructure plan, which includes billions in funding for rail improvements. Biden has been a major proponent of Amtrak for much of his career, earning him the nickname "Amtrak Joe."
Georgia's eight state-operated mass vaccination sites are set to close on May 21 following "a notable decrease in demand," officials said. After this Friday, the sites will no longer give first doses of the Pfizer vaccine. "This transition to the Johnson and Johnson single-dose vaccine for the next month allows us to complete the full vaccination cycle for Georgians who received their first Pfizer vaccination at our sites, continue providing COVID-19 vaccination to Georgians who wish to use our sites, and deploy Pfizer first doses previously allocated to GEMA/HS [Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security] to other local providers across Georgia," Stallings said in a statement Monday.

Wayne Kendall, an attorney representing Brown's family, displayed autopsy graphics pointing out that Brown was shot four times in his right arm. Kendall described those wounds as glancing wounds that did not kill Brown.
Missouri politicians and journalists are mourning a 24-year-old Kansas City radio reporter who was fatally shot while in her home. KCUR reporter Aviva Okeson-Haberman was found with a gunshot wound on Friday when authorities responded to her apartment for a welfare call, Kansas City police said. KCUR said colleagues went to check on her after she hadn't responded to messages.
In the effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom, there are now enough verified signatures to trigger an election, likely giving voters the option to remove the governor from office and pick his replacement. Organizers needed just short of 1.5 million verified signatures to trigger a statewide ballot. The state announced Monday evening it had alrady verified 1,626,042 signatures and that more were expected to be verified in the coming days.
The U.S. capital's primary law enforcement agency has reported "unauthorized access" on its computer network. "We are aware of unauthorized access on our server," the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia said in a statement to ABC News on Monday. "While we determine the full impact and continue to review activity, we have engaged the FBI to fully investigate this matter."
