Three Houston police officers were shot Thursday afternoon by a suspect who fled, carjacked a white Mercedes and barricaded himself in a home for several hours before being taken into custody, authorities said. Houston police said that the officers are all in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene in a white Mercedes and is being sought at this time.
Multiple persons of interest are in custody in connection with a sextuple homicide in Wisconsin that police believe was a targeted attack. Six people were found dead inside a Milwaukee home after officers conducted a welfare check at the residence Sunday, police said. All victims -- five men and one woman -- had been shot, police said.
Nearly 50 years after the suspected serial killer dubbed "The Doodler" terrorized San Francisco's gay community, police believe they have identified another murder victim -- and have doubled their reward for information leading to a conviction in the cold case. Five homicides were previously linked to The Doodler in the mid-1970s, with the first known killing occurring on Jan. 27, 1974, police said. On Wednesday, San Francisco police said they believe another man may be a sixth victim "as a result of a new investigation."

A massive search for 34 people still unaccounted for from a boat that capsized in the Straits of Florida on Saturday will be suspended at sundown on Thursday after a U.S. Coast Guard official announced there are likely no other survivors. During a news conference Thursday, Capt. Jo-Ann Burdian, commander of the Sector Miami Coast Guard, said four more bodies were found in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to five bodies recovered since the Coast Guard launched a search on Tuesday morning. Only one of 40 people believed to have been on what investigators suspect was a human-smuggling vessel was found alive, clinging to the hull of the boat, officials said.
Moderna announced Thursday that it's launched early-stage clinical trials of an HIV mRNA vaccine. The biotechnology company has teamed up with the nonprofit International AIDS Vaccine Initiative to develop the shot, which uses the same technology as Moderna's successful COVID-19 vaccine. The first participants in the Phase I trial were given doses at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C., according to a company statement.
"Maus," a Pulitzer-winning book about the Holocaust, has been banned in one Tennessee school district. The graphic novel by Art Spiegelman, chronicles how the author's parents survived the Holocaust in the Auschwitz concentration camp through depictions of animals -- with the Holocaust victims as mice, and Nazis as cats. At a McMinn County Board of Education meeting on Jan. 10, some members objected to the novel's images of mice stripping their clothes off at the concentration camp and what they said was its "vulgar" language.
Ethan Crumbley, the alleged Oxford High School shooter, will plead insanity, his lawyers said in a court filing on Wednesday. Crumbley was charged last month with multiple felony charges, including terrorism, in connection with the rampage that killed four students and injured several others on Nov. 30.

Police apprehended a teenager convicted of murder just hours after he and four other detainees escaped a Washington state juvenile detention center Thursday. The other unidentified detainees are still on the lam, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. Around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, a 15-year-old and the quartet of detainees, aged 14 to 17, escaped the Echo Glen Children's Center in Snoqualmie, Washington, police said.
The Supreme Court on Thursday released the letter Justice Stephen Breyer wrote to President Joe Biden telling him he would retire at the end of the current term. In the letter, dated Jan. 27 -- the day after news of his retirement broke -- Breyer said he would leave the bench after almost 28 years when the court recesses for the summer and assuming that a successor has been nominated and confirmed. White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily briefing that Breyer had hand delivered the letter to President Biden earlier Thursday.

A 17-year-old boy has been gunned down in the middle of the afternoon near his Philadelphia high school in the latest act of gun violence in the city. Christopher Braxton was found lying on a road with gunshot wound to his chest at about 2:54 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Braxton was a senior at nearby Bartram High School, school district spokeswoman Monica Lewis told ABC News.
