The Pentagon ordered Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base to cancel a previously approved drag show slated to take place on the base on the first day of Pride Month, according to two defense officials. The drag performance would have been held at the Officer's Club at southern Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base on Thursday, June 1, and had been approved by base commanders, just as it had been over the previous two years. The decision on hosting such shows is typically left in the hands of local commanders who follow guidance from military attorneys, but Nellis officials were told earlier his week by the Defense Department that Thursday's event was not consistent with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's recent comments to Congress and that it should be canceled or relocated off base, a defense official told ABC News.

The Malaysian climber was carried down from below the summit after narrowly surviving the harsh elements, a government official announced on Wednesday. Gelje Sherpa was guiding a client to Everest's summit on May 18 when he saw another climber struggling and shivering as he clung onto a rope, Reuters reported.

A child accidentally shot and killed another child in River Grove, Illinois, on Wednesday, according to police. The gun used in the incident belonged to the father of the deceased child, police said. River Grove police said the child was severely injured and later succumbed to their injury.

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Virginia man who fell from a cruise ship balcony earlier this week. Ronnie Peale Jr., 35, went overboard from a Carnival Magic cruise ship traveling off the coast of Florida on Monday, the Coast Guard said. After searching more than 5,171 square miles over the course of 60 hours, the Coast Guard said Wednesday night that it has suspended search efforts for Peale.
On Gary Rasor's 80th birthday, his children asked him to retire because there was no financial need for him to work. The city government of Davenport, Iowa, has released dozens of documents in connection with an apartment building that partially collapsed as three residents remain missing and the community demands answers. Canada has announced that it will begin putting individual warning labels on cigarettes and other tobacco products in an effort to further reduce their appeal, becoming the world’s first country to use such a measure. Beginning on August 1, Canada will implement a phased approach that will force cigarette companies to put individual health warnings on their products starting with king size cigarettes by the end of July 2024 and all other products -- including regular size cigarettes and little cigars -- by the end of April 2025. “The new Tobacco Products Appearance, Packaging and Labelling Regulations will be part of the Government of Canada's continued efforts to help adults who smoke to quit, to protect youth and non-tobacco users from nicotine addiction, and to further reduce the appeal of tobacco,” Health Canada said in a statement announcing the new tobacco labelling policy.
German authorities said Thursday that "a number of items were seized" in Portugal during a renewed search for missing British child Madeleine McCann. "These will be evaluated in the coming days and weeks," the Braunschweig District Attorney's Office in Germany said in a statement. "It is not yet possible to say whether any of the items are actually related to the Madeleine McCann case."
