A British museum will return 72 artifacts to the Nigerian government that were forcibly taken over a hundred years ago. The Horniman Museum and Gardens agreed to hand over the artifacts, including several sculptures known as Benin bronzes, after receiving a request for the artifacts from the Nigerian government. The pieces were looted from Benin City in southern Nigeria during a British military invasion in 1897, according to a statement from the museum's board of trustees.
The family of Gabby Petito announced Monday that they plan to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the police department in Moab, Utah, where Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie were questioned last year about a possible domestic dispute. Shortly after Petito and Laundrie were questioned by police on Aug. 12, 2021, Petito, 22, went missing. Petito's body was discovered last September in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has deployed a federal team to New York to investigate the case of polio detected in Rockland County. It's unclear how long the CDC will remain in the county or if the findings will be released to the public. On July 21, the New York State Health Department announced an unvaccinated patient in Rockland County had contracted a case of vaccine-derived polio, the first case in the United States in nearly a decade.
President Joe Biden on Monday traveled to Kentucky to survey damage from severe flooding in the state -- a visit that also marks his first presidential trip since he tested positive for COVID-19 last month. On Sunday, the president amended an existing emergency declaration for Kentucky to free up additional disaster assistance. Biden and first lady Jill Biden are scheduled to meet with Gov. Sentencing is underway for the three men convicted of federal hate crimes in the death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery. Travis McMichael, who fired the fatal shot on Feb. 23, 2020, was sentenced Monday to life in prison. "I feel every shot every day that I wake up," Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told reporters outside the courthouse Monday.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken is scheduled to meet with officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda this week, arriving in the middle of an ongoing conflict between militias and officials in the region. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in new funding are set to be given out this week to community organizations as part of a major anti-gun violence organization's latest nationwide efforts. Everytown for Gun Safety is distributing $1.5 million to a select collection of local nonprofit groups working to stop gun violence in their areas before it happens, Everytown officials tell ABC News. "There are more guns now than there were last year and the year before that -- and we know that when there are more guns, there's more violence," said Michael-Sean Spence, Everytown's director of community safety initiatives.
Detectives are seeking the public's help to locate a 16-year-old girl who has disappeared in northern California. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Saturday she will send additional state police to Albuquerque after the fourth murder of a Muslim man in the city in recent months. The governor's office said additional state police will be on patrol in the city and they are working in close coordination with the Albuquerque Police Department and the FBI to provide necessary support. "In addition, we will continue to do everything we can to support to the Muslim community during this difficult time."
Human remains were again found in Lake Mead, the country's largest reservoir that continues to shrink amid a decades-long drought, officials announced Sunday. According to the National Park Service, someone made the discovery at the park's Swim Beach in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, on the Nevada side, around 11:15 a.m. Saturday. This marks the fourth time since May that human remains were found in Lake Mead, where water levels continue to recede at historic levels.
Four people are dead after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a golf cart in Texas. Officers from the Galveston Police Department responded to the scene at the intersection of 33rd Street and Avenue R around 11:35 p.m. Saturday and found the adult driver of the golf cart dead at the scene, police said. An adult female passenger and two children were transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where they later died, police said.
Nearly uniform Republican opposition in the Senate on Sunday stripped a proposed cap on insulin prices in private insurance from Democrats' party-line climate, health and tax bill. Democrats had sought to overrule a decision from the Senate rules official, the parliamentarian, that a $35-per-month limit on insulin costs under private insurances did not comply with the budget reconciliation process, which allowed Democrats to pass their bill with a bare majority. The cap, which was proposed by Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., needed 60 votes to pass and remain in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
