Disturbing new details were revealed in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case as suspect Rex Heuermann was charged Thursday with the murders of two additional women, bringing his total number of alleged killings to six. Heuermann was charged Thursday with the 2003 murder of Jessica Taylor, whose remains were found on Long Island in Gilgo Beach and in Manorville, and accused of the 1993 murder of Sandra Costilla, whose remains were found in North Sea, Long Island, in 1993, according to court documents. Investigators said they recovered a planning document from one of 350 electronic devices recovered in Heuermann's Long Island home that contained a checklist of things to do in order to package a body for transport, avoid leaving traces of DNA and other steps.
An early season heat dome is bringing life-threatening temperatures to 30 million people from Texas to California. The hottest temperature in the U.S. on Wednesday was recorded in Death Valley, California, where it reached a scorching 118 degrees. On Thursday, temperatures are forecast to soar to 112 degrees in Las Vegas, 111 degrees in Phoenix, 110 in Palm Springs and 107 in Tucson, Arizona, and Fresno, California.

After the successful launch of the first astronaut-crewed test flight aboard Boeing's Starliner, new problems have been discovered, according to NASA. Scores of civilians are feared dead in Sudan's Al Jazirah state following attacks by the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group around the village of Wad Al-Noora on Wednesday. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 162 people have reported illness and 54 people have been hospitalized with salmonella following a cucumber recall by a Florida producer. The agency's epidemiologic data and testing showed the outbreak strain of Salmonella Africana has been reported in 25 states and the District of Columbia.

Scholastic announced Thursday that Suzanne Collins has written a fifth "Hunger Games" book, titled "Sunrise on the Reaping," that will be published March 18, 2025. A synopsis of the book reads, "'Sunrise on the Reaping' will revisit the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of 'The Hunger Games,' starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell."

A federal judge will consider the Department of Justice's request to have former Trump adviser Steve Bannon begin his four-month prison term in connection with his contempt of Congress conviction. Bannon was sentenced to four months for contempt of Congress in October 2022 after he was found guilty of defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, but Judge Nichols agreed to postpone the jail term while Bannon appealed the conviction.

A couple from Texas experienced a shocking incident during their visit to a wildlife center when a giraffe picked up their toddler during a safari drive-thru. Over the weekend, the family visited Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, where the visitors are allowed to drive themselves through a path to get a closer look at and to feed the wildlife. Paisley Toten, 2, was sitting at the back of her family's truck with her mom, feeding the giraffe, when the animal grabbed her by the shirt and lifted her into the air.

Four firefighters were injured Wednesday while battling a 60-acre wildfire in Napa County, California, officials said. The Crystal Fire, which was burning amid high heat, was about 65% contained by the evening, officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The four firefighters were being treated at local hospitals for injuries "related to response in the steep, rocky terrain and hot summer conditions," fire officials said.
