Father and teenage son drown as dad tries to rescue him from lake
A father and his teenage son have drowned at a lake in Virginia after the child’s father tried to rescue him, according to authorities. Both of the victims were subsequently transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination.

2 inmates on the run after escaping Louisiana jail, police say
Police in Louisiana said Monday they caught two of the four inmates who escaped from jail over the weekend, unbeknownst to the guards who were supposed to be watching them. Omarion Hookfin, 19; Avery Guidry, 19; Jamarcus Cyprian, 20, and Travon Johnson, 21, who were all incarcerated at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, escaped through a weak portion of the jail's chain-linked fence on Saturday and Sunday, Chief Jimmy Travis of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office told reporters during a news conference Monday. The jail's officials did not know about the breakouts until they received a phone call Sunday afternoon from a family member of one of the escapees, Travis said.

As the Israel-Hamas war crosses the seven-month mark, negotiations are apparently stalled to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist organization, and Israeli forces continue to launch incursions in the southern Gazan town of Rafah ahead of a possible large-scale invasion. The Kuwait Specialized Hospital in Rafah, one of its largest, announced that the hospital had been out of service due to the expansion of the Israeli military operation on the city and the repeated and deliberate targeting of the hospital's vicinity, hospital's director Suhaib Al-Hams said Sunday. The Israeli occupation repeatedly targeted the hospital, the most recent of which was targeting the hospital gate, which led to the death of two of the staff working there, as well as the injury of five members of the medical staff in a previous targeting, Al-Hams said in a press statement received by Sanad News Agency.

Famed boxer Mike Tyson, 57, suffered a medical scare onboard a flight from Miami to Los Angeles over the weekend. The Hall of Fame fighter is "doing great," according to representatives for Tyson. The incident on Sunday occurred mere minutes before landing, according to Tyson's representatives.

Bill Walton, the legendary basketball player and sportscaster, died Monday at 71, according to the NBA. The two-time NBA champion -- first for the Portland Trail Blazers in 1977, and then for the Boston Celtics in 1986 -- died of cancer and was surrounded by family, the NBA said. Standing at 6 feet, 11 inches tall, topped off with a mop of red hair and an encyclopedic knowledge of ‘60s counterculture, few athletes have ever stood out as much as Walton -- and that was before he stepped on the basketball court.

Memorial Day weather: Rain along the East Coast and scorching heat in the Gulf
At least 70 million Americans were under severe weather alerts, including flooding and tornado watches, on Memorial Day. Severe weather is expected to move into the East Coast's I-95 corridor, bringing with it damaging winds, hail and maybe even a few tornadoes. Sunday was the most active weather day so far this year, with at least 576 severe storm reports.

Scientists may have found the mechanism behind the unusual explosive eruptions seen at one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Kilauea, located at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, experienced at least a dozen instances in 2018 when lava was spewing from the crater like a "stomp-rocket toy," a children's toy that involves launching a rocket into the air after stomping on the release mechanism, according to a paper published Monday in Nature Geosciences. The unusual eruption behavior likely contributed to the severity of that lava flow that year that destroyed more than 600 properties, Josh Crozier, a geologist at Stanford University and lead researcher of the study, told ABC News.

'General Hospital' actor Johnny Wactor dies at 37 after being shot in Los Angeles
"General Hospital" actor Johnny Wactor, who was known for playing Brando Corbin in the beloved ABC soap opera, died after being shot on Saturday. Wactor was shot after he interrupted three male suspects who were allegedly attempting to remove a catalytic converter from his vehicle, his mother, Scarlett Wactor, told KABC-TV Los Angeles. The incident happened around 3:25 am PT on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

As tornado season ramps up, more people are turning to private home shelters to survive
When a powerful EF-4 tornado ripped through Greenfield, Iowa, last week, TJ Oder, the chief of the town's volunteer fire department, said his house took a direct hit. Oder said that when the twister struck, he was helping to prepare a triage center to treat injured neighbors and get them to hospitals while his family members were hunkered down in his personal shelter. At least four people were killed and 35 were injured in the Greenfield twister, but throughout the area, many lives were saved due to people being close to a public shelter as the twister bore down or having one like Oder just steps away in their own home, officials said.

Disney songwriting legend Richard M. Sherman, remembered for "Mary Poppins" and "It's a Small World," among many others, has died at 95 years old, the Walt Disney Company announced Saturday. One half of the Academy Award-winning duo with his brother, the late Robert B. Sherman, Richard is remembered as a "prolific composer-lyricist" and a "key member of Walt Disney's inner circle of creative talents," the company said in a press release. "Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend, creating along with his brother Robert the beloved classics that have become a cherished part of the soundtrack of our lives," said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company.

Nicki Minaj was arrested by police at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Saturday, a Dutch National Police source confirmed to ABC News. The Dutch police, in a statement, said a 41-year-old woman was arrested for trying to leave the country while in "possession of soft drugs, which is prohibited." The police agency later said she had been released from custody.

Multiple people killed, dozens injured in Russian airstrike on Ukraine shopping center
Russian forces struck a Ukrainian shopping center in Kharkiv on Saturday, leaving four people dead and 38 people wounded according to local officials. Oleh Synyehubov, the Kharkiv governor, said on Ukrainian television that they have so far identified 16 people as officially missing. Synyehubov also said there was a second strike in Kharkiv that injured 12 people, including a 13-year-old boy.

Nash died on May 17 in hospice care after a recent breast cancer diagnosis, though she never officially retired from her role with American Airlines.

Severe weather onslaught continues as big storms threaten holiday travel
There is a major severe weather threat in the Plains on Saturday with more than 8 million people across seven states facing the possibility for dangerous weather. A Moderate Risk (Level 4 out of 5) is in the outlook for parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri as the Storm Prediction Center warns of a few long-lived supercells capable of intense tornadoes that may occur with giant hail and destructive wind gusts expected. Storms are expected to flare up during the late afternoon and continue into the evening hours on Saturday and those on the road for Memorial Day weekend are urged to pay attention to severe weather warnings.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has returned home following his "non-surgical medical procedure" on Friday, and his since resumed his duties, said Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon's top spokesman. Austin underwent the two-and-a-half hour procedure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, during which his authorities were temporarily transferred to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks. "He is now back home and will continue with his official schedule which includes events on Monday for Memorial Day," Ryder said, who announced the procedure in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

The request follows Trump's efforts to seize on an item of recently released discovery in the case that he falsely claims shows President Biden planned to assassinate him during the search of his Mar-a-Lago club in August 2022. "The Government moves to modify defendant Donald J. Trump’s conditions of release, to make clear that he may not make statements that pose a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents participating in the investigation and prosecution of this case," the filings from Smith said.
