USGS raises alert level as Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts again
Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, has begun to erupt again, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Lava began to emerge from the summit of the famed volcano, located at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, around 12:30 a.m. local time, prompting the USGS to raise the alert level to red. A red alert signifies that a volcanic eruption is imminent, underway or suspected, with potential hazardous activity on the ground and in the air.

ABC News has learned that New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez plans to file a petition by the end of the day Monday to get on the U.S. Senate ballot in the Garden State as an independent candidate. The deadline to file signatures is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, which is also the date of New Jersey's partisan primaries. Independent candidates need 800 signatures to get on the U.S. Senate general election ballot in New Jersey.

Man literally dodges bullet thanks to his chain necklace: 'Just incredible'
A man in Colorado literally dodged a bullet thanks to his chain, according to police. The victim was wearing a silver chain, about 10 millimeters in width, when he got into an argument with an armed man on Tuesday, according to police in Commerce City, just outside of Denver. The suspect fired, and instead of hitting the victim in the neck, the .22-caliber bullet got lodged in the chain, police said.

Mexico elects Claudia Sheinbaum, 1st woman to be president, election institute says
Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected president of Mexico, marking the first time a woman has been chosen to lead the country, Mexico's election institute announced early Monday. "For the first time in 200 years of the Republic, there will be a woman president and she will be transformative," Sheinbaum wrote in a social media post in Spanish. A sample vote count showed Sheinbaum was expected to receive at least 58% of the vote, an irreversible lead over her challengers, according to the Mexican National Electoral Institute’.

The first major California wildfire of the year was 50% contained Monday morning after high winds caused it to spread over the weekend to 14,168 acres, officials said. The Corral Fire is burning in San Joaquin County about 50 miles outside San Francisco, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire ignited Saturday around 2:30 p.m. PT near the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Altamont Pass area of Northern California's Diablo Range and spread into Stanislaus Stanislaus County, reaching the western edge of Tracy, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. announced with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that it is recalling whole cucumbers due to the potential for them to be contaminated with salmonella. "The recall was initiated after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture informed the company that a product sample tested positive for the bacteria," the recall stated. "The FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if this sample is related to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak investigation."

Federal prosecutors pursuing a conviction of President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden on three felony gun charges have characterized their upcoming trial as "a simple case" -- and the facts presented in charging documents certainly appear to support that claim. According to special counsel David Weiss' office, in October of 2018, Hunter Biden knowingly lied on a federal form about his drug use in order to procure a Colt Cobra 38SPL revolver -- conduct that, at face value, would constitute a federal crime. At a recent pretrial hearing, an attorney for Biden suggested the firearm form at the heart of the case was "much more complicated than [the] special counsel indicates it is."

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, has announced she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. "My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer," Rep. Jackson Lee, 74, said in a statement Sunday night. Due to her upcoming treatments, Jackson Lee said she could occasionally miss legislative votes but she is "committed" to working with House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on legislation that is "critical for the prosperity and security of the American people."
