D.C. Air National Guard F-16s were scrambled on Sunday from Maryland -- causing a sonic boom heard throughout large portions of Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area -- to investigate what the North American Aerospace Defense Command called an "unresponsive" Cessna business jet that had entered a restricted area over the nation's capital and ultimately crashed into a forest area of southwest Virginia. "In coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, NORAD F-16 fighter aircraft responded to an unresponsive Cessna 560 Citation V aircraft over Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia on June 4, 2023," a statement from NORAD's Continental U.S. Region said.
At least 200 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in a train accident in India, as the death toll continues to rise, officials said. The crash occurred Friday night in Odisha, a state in eastern India, and involved three trains, according to Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena. Several cars of a passenger train derailed in the incident, he said.
Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway, will likely be extradited to the United States Tuesday, a source close to the family told ABC News. Van der Sloot left the Challapalca prison on Saturday as planned. The Dutch citizen has been serving a 28-year sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old college student Stephany Flores.
Vivek Ramaswamy, the youngest 2024 Republican presidential candidate and self-proclaimed political outsider, on Sunday made his "America first" pitch for the White House while defending his view that the U.S. must force "major concessions" from Ukraine in order to end Russia's invasion and allow a sharper focus on facing China. "The job of the U.S. president is to look after American interests," he told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz, arguing that militarily backing Ukraine's continued resistance to Russia's invasion is a less compelling goal than dealing with Beijing. Ramaswamy's position on Ukraine and Russia puts him in the minority among politicians, with leading Republicans and Democrats saying Russia's invasion must not be successful in order to preserve stability in Europe.
The body of one of the missing residents still thought to be inside of a partially collapsed apartment building in Iowa has been found, officials told ABC News. Branden Colvin, 42, was found on Saturday -- a week after the building in downtown Davenport, Iowa, collapsed, Sarah Ott, chief strategy officer for the City of Davenport, confirmed to ABC News. Ryan Hitchcock, 51, and Daniel Prien, 60, remain missing.
More than a dozen migrants were dropped off on the doorstep of a California church after being transported to the state via private plane, according to state officials. The migrants were dropped off at the Diocese of Sacramento on Saturday "with no prior arrangement or care in place" and in possession of documentation purporting to be from the government of the State of Florida, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement. The group had been transported from Texas to New Mexico before being flown by private chartered jet to Sacramento, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement.
Rep. Mike Turner, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, on Sunday lambasted what he called increased military hostility by China and insisted the U.S. "stand strong" after recent close calls near American ships and planes and the suspected spy balloon that was shot down off the East Coast. "What we're seeing is an unbelievable aggression by China," Turner, R-Ohio, told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz. "If you look at the balloon that flew over the United States, the Chinese police stations, the aggressiveness against our both planes and ships and international water, it goes right to the heart of what President Xi [Jinping] said when he stood next to [President Vladimir] Putin in Russia where he said they are trying to make change that has not happened in 100 years."
In the second major provocation by China's military in the span of a week, a Chinese warship carried out what the U.S. military called "an unsafe maritime interaction" when it crossed an American warship's bow at a distance of 150 yards forcing the U.S. Navy destroyer to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision. The incident occurred on Saturday as the American destroyer USS Chung-Hoon and the Canadian frigate HMCS Montreal executed a transit in the international waters of the Taiwan Strait, the body of water that separates the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, according to officials.

A 29-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a West Virginia state trooper is in police custody, according to the ATF's Louisville Office. Law enforcement responded to a shooting complaint in Mingo County, West Virginia, on Friday where they encountered Timothy Kennedy who began shooting at police. Troopers said they were met with gunfire when they responded to a shooting complaint near Matewan.
India’s top wrestling athletes -- Olympians and world champions alike -- have taken to the streets in protest of allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief, President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The athletes accuse the WFI chief, 66, of sexual harassment over the span of more than a decades and have been staging protests in New Delhi -- which have slowly intensified -- since April 23. At least seven athletes -- including a minor -- have filed official complaints against Singh who has denied allegations, saying they are “politically motivated” and asserting that he is “ready to hang [him]self” if found guilty.

California cannabis users may soon not have to travel far to get a cup of coffee to go with their legal pot. The state's assembly passed a bill Wednesday that would allow California's localities the right to approve the sale of food and non-alcoholic drinks inside legal cannabis dispensaries. Current state law prohibits any food or beverage from being served in recreational marijuana dispensaries.

"No one from the military or health ministry was coming to pick the bodies up," Madni told ABC News. Investigators are probing the digital footprint of Bryan Kohberger, the suspect accused of killing four Idaho college students in an early morning attack last year, according to new court documents. The documents include search warrant applications for some of Kohberger's internet activity and some additional phone records, as well as some of the four victims' social media accounts. There is "probable cause to believe" that those records could yield evidence regarding the November killings of Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin and Madison Mogen at the girls' off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, the documents say.
Attorneys for former President Donald Trump have been unable to locate the sensitive military document that Trump discussed on tape during a July 2021 meeting at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, sources familiar with the matter tell ABC News. Federal investigators have the audio recording, on which Trump acknowledges he held onto a sensitive military document after leaving office, sources previously told ABC News. On the recording, which ABC News has not listened to nor obtained, Trump is heard attacking Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley and referencing one document in particular that Trump claimed Milley had compiled, according to sources.
A New York City man accused of fatally shooting an apparent assailant outside his apartment building now faces more than a dozen weapons charges after detectives allegedly discovered an arsenal of firearms and body armor in his home, court records show. Charles Foehner, 65, was arrested on multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon on Thursday -- a day after police say he shot and killed a 32-year-old man outside a parking garage in Queens. Foehner has not been charged for the shooting itself.
