One person was killed and four others were injured following a mass shooting Saturday in Baltimore after a passenger was shot and crashed their car, police said. The police arrived at the scene to find two adult males, an adult female, and a 2-year-old boy, all of whom were suffering from apparent gun shot wounds. Medics transported the victims to area hospitals, where one of the adult male victims was pronounced dead.

At least six people are dead after an express bus and a box truck crashed in Upstate New York on Saturday, police said. Three people were also injured in the crash, with one person in critical condition and two seriously injured, New York State Police said in an update Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on State Highway 37 in Louisville and involved a 2021 Freightliner box truck and a 2013 express bus, police said.
The controversial Memphis Police Department unit at the center of Tyre Nichols' death earlier this month has been deactivated. The SCORPION unit, which stands for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, has been "permanently" deactivated, the Memphis Police Department announced on Saturday, a day after city officials released footage of the fatal confrontation between Nichols and former members assigned to the unit. The decision came after Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis met with other members of the unit, who agreed with the deactivation, according to a statement from the department.

Another mountain lion near Los Angeles has died, over a month after P-22, a beloved local mountain lion who spurred conservation efforts, was euthanized in December after being hit by a vehicle. The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area shared the news Friday that P-81, a four-year-old mountain lion, died on Jan. 22 after likely being hit by a vehicle. Since March 2022, vehicle strikes have been the cause of death for nine mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains research area.
Health providers from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who cared for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin after he collapsed from cardiac arrest were honored with the key to the city. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval presented the key to the city during a ceremony on Thursday morning to providers on behalf of the care staff in different departments and specialties who contributed to the care and recovery of the Bills' safety. Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field on Jan. 2 at Paycor Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football during the first quarter, team officials said.
Two former south Florida police officers handcuffed a homeless man last month and drove him to an isolated area where they beat him unconscious, prosecutors alleged Thursday. According to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Hialeah city officers Rafael Otano and Lorenzo Ofila, who have since been fired, were responding to a disturbance at a bakery shortly after 5 p.m. on Dec. 17, when they encountered 50-year-old Jose Ortega Gutierrez, a homeless man who often roamed the area and was familiar to the officers. Ofila, 22, allegedly handcuffed Ortega Gutierrez and placed him in the back of his marked police car, said Fernandez Rundle and claimed surveillance footage from the area provided no evidence that supported detaining him.
Embattled New York Rep. George Santos insists he will serve out his term and has indicated it's up to his constituents to reelect him or vote him out of office, despite mounting controversy over his past falsehoods, scrutiny of his finances and investigations in the U.S. and Brazil. Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday said that if Santos is found to have broken the law, "we will remove him," though he didn’t clarify what that removal would involve. Disgraced crypto executive Sam Bankman-Fried has made “recent attempts” to contact prospective witnesses in his criminal case, federal prosecutors said Friday in a letter to the judge that sought new conditions of his release. Bankman-Fried has been free on a $250 million bond after he was charged with fraud and conspiracy following the collapse of the crypto platform he founded, FTX. Prosecutors asked the judge to modify the conditions of the bond and order Bankman-Fried not to contact or communicate with current or former FTX or Alameda employees and not to use any encrypted messaging apps.
Former President Donald Trump is embarking on his first campaign swing of the 2024 presidential cycle on Saturday where he is expected to announce his leadership team from South Carolina as he seeks the White House for the third time – but his appearance comes as some conservatives in the state say their support for Trump isn't locked in. Trump will deliver remarks from the Columbia State House in an event hosted by Gov. Henry McMaster who has endorsed Trump, and Sen. An 11-year-old girl was able to truly experience the Disney magic recently thanks to a princess who knew how to communicate with her in American Sign Language. Zoe Tapley of New Braunfels, Texas, was visiting Disneyland on July 16 with her family when she spotted Princess Anna greeting park-goers nearby. Zoe's mom Jeanette Tapley, 36, told "Good Morning America" that her husband Jesse and Zoe love meeting the different characters when they visit Disney parks and lined up to meet the "Frozen" character.
Tyre Nichols' family said the body camera footage of his encounter with police has left them angry, saddened and looking for more answers as to why he was brutalized. Two inmates, including a convicted murderer, who escaped from a Virginia jail have been apprehended in Tennessee, authorities said, more than 24 hours after announcing a fugitive manhunt. The inmates -- identified by the Washington County Virginia Sheriff's Office as Johnny Shane Brown, 51, of Rogersville, Tennessee, and Albert Lee Ricketson, 31, of Abingdon, Virginia -- allegedly escaped the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Abingdon from a recreational yard around 2:45 p.m. Thursday. A Washington County emergency alert issued about an hour later warned residents to stay indoors and lock their doors.
The Jan. 6 rioter who attacked fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick with pepper spray was sentenced Friday to 6 years and 8 months in prison. Julian Khater, 33, of Somerset, New Jersey, pleaded guilty last year to assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon. According to court records, Khater maced at least two officers that day at close range as a mob of rioters pulled down metal police barricades on the west front of the U.S. Capitol complex.
