Instead, the Federal Reserve on Wednesday imposed another hike, extending a yearlong blitz of rate increases that risks further banking woes and squeezes a different group: consumers in need of a loan. The supercharged rate hikes have ballooned loan costs for mortgages, car loans and credit cards, weighing on the budgets of U.S. households or forcing them to delay buying big-ticket items.
At least 19 people died as a "destructive" tornado and strong thunderstorms swept across Mississippi late Friday, leaving a trail of damage for more than 100 miles, local and federal authorities said. Search and rescue operations were underway in Sharkey and Humphreys counties, Mississippi's Emergency Management Agency said late Friday. The agency issued a series of tornado warnings in counties throughout the state.
Gordon Moore, the co-founder and former chairman of tech giant Intel, died Friday at the age of 94, the company and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation announced. A press release stated Moore died "surrounded by family" in Hawaii. Moore and Robert Noyce founded Intel in 1968.
The Los Angeles public school district reached a "historic" agreement with its Service Employees International Union Local 99 on Friday, the district announced. The tentative agreement comes after the union's members -- which include bus drivers, cafeteria workers and special education assistants -- went on strike for three days this week. The teachers union also honored the service union's picket lines, forcing the Los Angeles Unified School District to cancel classes for 420,000 students for Tuesday through Thursday.
Two migrants died and at least a dozen more were injured after becoming trapped in a train car in Uvalde County, Texas, police said Friday. Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told ABC News that a total of 17 people were trapped in the container. Three migrants were "okay," the mayor said.
Republican members of the House Oversight Committee and two Democrats toured a Washington, D.C., jail on Friday where some Jan. 6 defendants are being held. The congressional delegation was led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., one of the most vocal critics of the detainment of individuals charged in connection with the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Speaking with ABC News earlier this week, Greene said the visit would focus on the conditions of those being jailed, including what Greene claimed to be "reports of abuse."
A U.S. official told ABC News that there were two new attacks late Friday on two U.S. facilities in Deir ez-Zor Province in eastern Syria after another one earlier in the day and a drone attack on Thursday that prompted retaliatory U.S. airstrikes that targeted Iranian-backed militias believed responsible. The official said that two of the three drones that targeted one U.S. facility were shot down, but one drone made it through. The official said that five rockets were fired at another U.S. facility where the American service member was wounded.
President Joe Biden and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a new migration deal as part of Biden's first visit to America's northern neighbor. The new agreement will allow Canada to send migrants who cross at unofficial ports of entry at America's northern border back to the U.S., a change to the Safe Third Country Agreement long-sought by Canada. The U.S. will also be able to turn back asylum seekers who travel across the border from Canada.
A dangerous tornado outbreak is headed to the South, where intense, long-track tornadoes reaching EF-3 or higher are possible Friday evening. A radar-confirmed "large and destructive" tornado was located around 8:22 p.m. CT about 12 miles northeast of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, moving northeast at 50 mph, the National Weather Service said late Friday. The NWS issued emergency warnings for several towns in the northwest part of the state, including Midnight and Silver City.
Gwyneth Paltrow has taken the stand in the civil trial for a ski accident that occurred more than seven years ago. Paltrow testified Friday about the details of the accident, which occurred on Feb. 26, 2016. The Academy Award-winner and Goop CEO said that the accident allegedly happened at the top of a run called Bandana at Deer Valley Ski Resort in Utah.
An American couple visiting Haiti is being held at ransom after being kidnapped from a bus nearly a week ago, according to their family. Jean-Dickens Toussaint and his wife, Abigail Toussaint, of Tamarac, Florida, were in Haiti to see ailing relatives and attend a community festival when they were kidnapped Saturday while traveling on a bus from Port-au-Prince, their family said. A family friend who met the couple at the airport to escort them was also kidnapped, their niece, Christie, who declined to give her last name, told ABC Miami affiliate WPLG.
The Fairfax County Police Department released body camera footage of the fatal police shooting of Timothy Johnson, 37, who allegedly stole a pair of sunglasses in a Northern Virginia mall. The surveillance and body camera videos from Feb. 22 were shown publicly for the first time during a Thursday press conference led by Police Chief Kevin Davis, who announced that the officer who fired the fatal shot has been dismissed from the department. The other officer involved has been placed on modified restricted duty, he said.

Trump attorney Evan Corcoran, following a judge's ruling piercing attorney-client privilege, appeared Friday before a grand jury probing President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents after leaving the White House and his possible obstruction of the government's efforts to retrieve them, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. An appeals court ruled Wednesday that Corcoran must testify in probe being conducted by special counsel Jack Smith. The three-judge panel on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected an effort by Trump's attorneys to block Corcoran from having to testify and hand over records to Smith's team, according to court records.

Pennsylvania's Blackhawk School District has filed a lawsuit against Norfolk Southern alleging various causes of action including negligence in last month's train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and subsequent controlled release of toxic chemicals. The lawsuit, filed Thursday, alleges that the derailment and burning of the contents of the rail cars "caused toxic, hazardous, and dangerous chemicals to be released onto and into the ground, into the air, and into the surface and subsurface waterways and groundwater." It was carrying hazardous materials, including combustible liquids, flammable liquids, and flammable gas, and toxic chemicals that subsequently ignited.
With a grand jury weighing possible charges against former President Donald Trump, the case is drawing comparisons to the indictment of a rising Democratic star over a decade ago that also involved hush money accusations. In 2011, John Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina and two-time presidential candidate, was charged in an alleged plot to violate campaign finance laws during his 2008 bid for the White House. Federal prosecutors accused Edwards of soliciting nearly $1 million from wealthy donors to hide his affair with videographer Rielle Hunter -- and that he was the father of their baby -- to prevent damage to his reputation as a family man during the campaign.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear vetoed a massive bill Friday passed by the Republican-led state legislature last week that banned gender-affirming healthcare for minors, placed strict rules on how teachers can address transgender students and other restrictions related to sexuality. In his one-page summary for the veto of Senate Bill 150, the Democratic governor cited the high rates of suicide among transgender youth and the concerns from parents across the state for his opposition to the bill. "My faith teaches me that all children are children of God and Senate Bill 150 will endanger the children of Kentucky," Beshear wrote.
A federal judge has rejected former President Donald Trump's claims of executive privilege and has ordered Mark Meadows and other former top aides to testify before a federal grand jury investigating Trump's efforts to overturn the election leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell ABC News. Meadows, Trump's former chief of staff, was subpoenaed along with the other former aides by Special counsel Jack Smith for testimony and documents related to the probe.
Wenjing Cao and her son Hefei Liu are still celebrating a week after learning they were both accepted into residency programs on Match Day, which took place on March 17 this year. Match Day, an annual event coordinated with the National Resident Matching Program, is the day when medical school students and international medical school graduates who applied for residency and fellowship training programs find out the institutions they’ve been matched with. Cao, 54, a research scientist at the University of Kansas, graduated from medical school in China and practiced internal medicine for a decade before immigrating to the U.S. with her family in 2006.
