The three men convicted of hate crimes in the death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery will be sentenced Monday. Gregory McMichael; his son, Travis McMichael; and their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan each face life sentences after being convicted by a federal jury in February. The jury decided that the three white men followed and killed Arbery because he was Black.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars in new funding are set to be given out this week to community organizations as part of a major anti-gun violence organization's latest nationwide efforts. Everytown for Gun Safety is distributing $1.5 million to a select collection of local nonprofit groups working to stop gun violence in their areas before it happens, Everytown officials tell ABC News. "There are more guns now than there were last year and the year before that -- and we know that when there are more guns, there's more violence," said Michael-Sean Spence, Everytown's director of community safety initiatives.
Detectives are seeking the public's help to locate a 16-year-old girl who has disappeared in northern California. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Saturday she will send additional state police to Albuquerque after the fourth murder of a Muslim man in the city in recent months. The governor's office said additional state police will be on patrol in the city and they are working in close coordination with the Albuquerque Police Department and the FBI to provide necessary support. "In addition, we will continue to do everything we can to support to the Muslim community during this difficult time."
Human remains were again found in Lake Mead, the country's largest reservoir that continues to shrink amid a decades-long drought, officials announced Sunday. According to the National Park Service, someone made the discovery at the park's Swim Beach in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, on the Nevada side, around 11:15 a.m. Saturday. This marks the fourth time since May that human remains were found in Lake Mead, where water levels continue to recede at historic levels.
Four people are dead after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a golf cart in Texas. Officers from the Galveston Police Department responded to the scene at the intersection of 33rd Street and Avenue R around 11:35 p.m. Saturday and found the adult driver of the golf cart dead at the scene, police said. An adult female passenger and two children were transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where they later died, police said.
Nearly uniform Republican opposition in the Senate on Sunday stripped a proposed cap on insulin prices in private insurance from Democrats' party-line climate, health and tax bill. Democrats had sought to overrule a decision from the Senate rules official, the parliamentarian, that a $35-per-month limit on insulin costs under private insurances did not comply with the budget reconciliation process, which allowed Democrats to pass their bill with a bare majority. The cap, which was proposed by Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., needed 60 votes to pass and remain in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
The Senate on Sunday passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) along party lines, 51-50, handing Democrats a crucial legislative win as the midterm cycle ramps up -- despite GOP objections at the billions in spending and drug pricing reforms. The sprawling climate, tax and health care legislation is now set up for quick passage in the Democratic-controlled House, with timing still to be announced, before President Joe Biden signs it into law. President Joe Biden has been cleared to break isolation now that he has tested negative for COVID-19 for the second time, his physician announced on Sunday. An antigen test taken by Biden on Sunday produced a negative result for the second consecutive day, White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor wrote in a letter clearing Biden to travel. Biden arrived in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Sunday morning -- his first travel out of Washington, D.C., since late July, when he first tested positive for COVID.
With the midterm elections three months away, Americans maintain a sour view on the state of the economy and are pessimistic about its future course, with President Joe Biden’s approval rating across a range of issue areas continuing to suffer, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll. Americans' views of Biden's handling of the economic recovery remain overwhelmingly negative -- and are virtually unchanged from the same poll in early June, with only 37% of Americans approving of the job the president is doing and 62% disapproving in the latest ABC News/Ipsos poll, which was conducted using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel. The only area where Biden sees some improvement in this poll is on his handling of gas prices.
As more states enact near-total bans and restrictions on abortion, providers say many patients are experiencing delayed care which can force them into later stages of pregnancy. Abortion care options are becoming more limited and complex in some cases, which often means higher costs for patients. For example, medication abortion, which is less costly than other options, is only an option up to 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Once he saw how much water had risen in the creek by his home in eastern Kentucky, "I knew we were in trouble," Larry Adams said. Adams grew up in Whitesburg, Kentucky, which saw significant flooding during last month's storms. On July 28, as floodwaters surged through his hometown and blackouts made it difficult to contact people, Adams grabbed his kayak and GoPro camera and went out to find his family.
At least nine people were injured in a shooting in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the early hours of Sunday, police said. Officers were already on the scene to disperse a "large disorderly crowd" when gunfire broke out at about 1:45 a.m. near the 1300 block of Main Street in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, according to a press release from the Cincinnati Police Department. The gunfire occurred following a physical altercation between two groups in the crowd, and at least two individuals exchanged gunfire near, police said.
The man charged with aggravated murder in the fatal shooting of four people in Ohio was arrested Saturday night in Lawrence, Kansas, the FBI's Cincinnati field office announced. Stephen Marlow, 39, was arrested by the Lawrence Police Department just before 10 p.m., according to John Porter, the police chief in Butler Township, Ohio, where the shooting deaths occurred.
