Over 100 miles of dead marine life
From Naples to Sarasota, beaches in Florida are littered with a massive load of dead marine wildlife that were ravaged by a natural phenomenon 'The Red Tide;' experts say it only going to get worse.
Trevor Reed, the former U.S. Marine recently released after nearly three years in Russian captivity, has called on the U.S. government to negotiate a prisoner swap like the one that freed him to bring home Americans Paul Whelan, a former Marine, and WNBA player Brittney Griner, who are both being detained in Russia. Reed and his parents, Joey and Paula Reed, told ABC News if it meant freeing Whelan and Griner, the United States should trade the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence, and who Russia has floated as a possible candidate for a swap.
Daniel Enriquez, 48, was shot and killed in an unprovoked attack on a Q train Sunday in New York City as it headed into Manhattan. The recent spate of crimes on the city's public transportation has left the city scrambling for answers as ridership continues to climb back toward pre-pandemic levels and more people return to riding with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Transit crime is up 58% from this time last year, though April showed a dip in crimes on public transportation, according to New York Police Department data.
With the last batches of ballots still being tallied in Pennsylvania's Republican Senate primary, Donald Trump weighed in last week to insist his chosen candidate go ahead and "declare victory" even though the counting wasn't complete. If voted into office, these officials would have the power to run elections -- or even try to reject or reverse the results -- as Trump has repeatedly urged them to do. "We have to be a lot sharper next time when it comes to counting the vote," Trump said in a video message earlier this year.
In the wake of Pfizer's new pediatric COVID-19 vaccine data for children under the age of 5, which was released on Monday, the Food and Drug Administration has set new, tentative dates for when its advisers will meet to discuss the COVID-19 vaccine applications for children. The FDA said it expects its independent Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee to convene in mid-June to discuss both Pfizer and Moderna's pediatric COVID-19 vaccines. "As we continue to address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there are a number of anticipated submissions and scientific questions that will benefit from discussion with our advisory committee members," Dr. Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement on Monday.
For many, the images of former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed sitting beside his parents for his first television interviews after 985 days in Russian detention are a heartwarming scene of reunion -- a happy ending to a harrowing ordeal. Paul Whelan, 52, is also a former U.S. Marine. While visiting Moscow to attend a wedding in December 2018, he was arrested and accused of espionage -- a charge he and American officials deny.
Reese Witherspoon's eldest son Deacon Phillippe celebrated going to prom over the weekend. In the pictures, he is seen wearing a gray suit with a pink boutonniere, posing both solo and with others -- including, in one photo, dad Ryan Phillippe.
When a disgruntled employee opened fire in the parking lot of a FedEx distribution facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, in April 2021, the shooter did so because he wanted to commit "suicidal murder," an FBI report released Monday concludes. Over the past five years, active shooter incidents have steadily increased, the FBI said, with the most recent in Buffalo, New York, on May 14 when a gunman killed 10 Black people at a local supermarket. The new report, titled "Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2021," says there were 61 mass shooting incidents in the U.S. in 2021, representing a nearly 100% in active shooter incidents from 2017, which saw 31.

"American Idol" season 20 winner Noah Thompson is still adjusting to being in the company of names like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. "I was just kind of just shocked, you know?" Thompson said Monday on "Good Morning America" when reflecting on the moment his name was called as this milestone season's champion. "Truthfully, I came into the competition not even thinking I would get a golden ticket, so to hear my name at the end, that was amazing."
In long-awaited data, Pfizer said its 3-dose vaccine was 80% effective against symptomatic omicron COVID-19 infection among children 6 months to under 5 years old. For all age groups, vaccine efficacy against more mild breakthrough infections waned in the face of the highly transmissible omicron variant, but efficacy against severe disease and death remained high for most age groups. Pfizer announced in December that it would not move forward with a two-dose vaccine after disappointing data, instead opting to study three doses for this age group.
In the coming weeks, thousands of graduates will walk across a stage to receive their college diploma. When they leave the stage, they will have not only a degree but also, in most cases, a mountain of bills, joining the more than 40 million Americans who owe a collective $1.76 trillion in student debt, according to the Education Data Initiative, a nonprofit organization. Corazon Eaton of Columbus, Ohio, is among that group.
When the war in Ukraine broke out in February, Trevor Reed said he believed it meant he likely would never come home. The American former Marine by that time had been imprisoned in Russia for nearly three years, held hostage after being convicted on trumped up charges. For 985 days, Reed was held in a series of Russian prisons, thrown in isolation cells as small as a closet for 23 hours a day, placed in a psychiatric ward and sent to a forced labor camp he described as looking and feeling like something "out of medieval times.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating an outbreak of salmonella infections that is possibly linked to Jif peanut butter products. The J.M. Smucker Company issued a voluntary recall for its creamy, crunchy, natural and reduced fat peanut butter products that were distributed nationwide, with lot code numbers 1274425 to 2140425, the FDA announced Friday. There have been at least 14 illnesses reported, including two hospitalizations, according to the FDA.
Florida health officials are investigating what they describe as a "presumptive" monkeypox case, making it the third possible case of the virus in the U.S. as global infections continue to rise. The case is being investigated in Broward County and appears to be related to international travel, the Florida Department of Health in Broward County said in a press release Sunday. A Massachusetts man who had recently traveled to Canada became the first case of the rare virus detected in the United States this year after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed his positive test on Wednesday.
New York City Police officers are searching for a gunman after a subway passenger was shot and killed in what investigators describe as an unprovoked attack. The suspect was pacing back and forth in the last car of a Manhattan-bound Q train as it crossed over the Manhattan Bridge around 11:45 a.m. Sunday when he pulled out a gun and "without provocation" fired it at a 48-year-old passenger at close range, striking him in the chest, witnesses told investigators, NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey announced at a press conference. When the train pulled into the Canal Street station -- the first Manhattan stop on the Q line -- the suspect fled, Corey said, describing him as dark-skinned with a beard and "heavy-set" and last seen wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white sneakers.
The Biden administration is planning for a likely wave of COVID-19 infections this fall and winter by ensuring both a "new generation" of vaccines and access to treatment and testing, White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha said on Sunday -- but he stressed that plan depended on congressional funding. "We have the resources," Jha told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz.
