June 7 is National Doughnut Day. Whether you’re partial to the cream-filled, glazed, jelly or chocolate varieties, the doughnut is something near and dear to so many of us. To celebrate, GoodMorningAmerica.com got a behind the scenes look at how the gourmet donuts are made at New York City’s iconic Doughnut Plant. Owner Mark Isreal has mastered the art of doughnut making, creating cake doughnuts with an irresistible texture similar to pound cake, and delicious square-shaped donuts with creative glazes and filling combinations. There’s blackout chocolate cake, pistachio, crème brulee, peanut butter and banana cream, and tres leches, which tastes just like the authentic cake. Each one is more inventive than the next. Click through to see how the tres leches doughnuts are made at the bakery, located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
