Met Gala 2024: See celebrity looks from fashion's biggest night

It's the first Monday in May, and the 2024 Met Gala red carpet has officially kicked off.

The annual affair is one of fashion's biggest nights, and celebrities have arrived in some of their very best, boldest, and brightest looks.

Held in New York City, the theme, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" is positioned to be a an exploration of "rebirth" and "renewal" that uses nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion, according to a release from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In addition to this year's theme, there is also an associated dress code titled "The Garden of Time," which is inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 book of the same name. The literature tells the story of a count and countess who live in a villa that overlooks an extraordinary garden being intruded upon by a mob.

Leading up to this year's extravaganza, fans anticipate seeing iconic looks from past attendees including Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya — who happen be co-chairs for this year's event.

Rihanna, a Met Gala red carpet veteran, has also talked about attending in a "very simple" look compared to previous years.

As Trump hush money trial draws to a close, jury instructions to play key role
The criminal hush money trial against former President Donald Trump is drawing to a close, with deliberations expected to begin as early as Wednesday. The charging -- or as it's also known, instructing -- of the jury is a standard procedural step in any jury trial, during which the judge advises jurors on how they should go about reaching their verdict. Jurors are instructed on how to apply these guidelines to the evidence presented during trial -- which in this case, includes the testimony of 20 witnesses and over 250 exhibits -- to determine whether the prosecution has proven their case against the defendant.

Company that posted discriminatory 'whites only' job ad settles with federal government
A company that posted a discriminatory job advertisement seeking only white candidates has been fined by the federal government and come to separate agreements with the U.S. Department of Justice and Department of Labor as punishment, according to officials. Arthur Grand Technologies, an information technology services firm based in Virginia posted a discriminatory job advertisement in March 2023 that restricted eligible candidates to “only US Born Citizens [white] who are local within 60 miles from Dallas, TX [Don’t share with candidates],” according to a statement from the United States Department of Justice released on Thursday. “An investigation by OFCCP (Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs) determined that, in April 2023, Arthur Grand Technologies advertised an opening for a business analyst position with its sales and insurance claims team in Dallas on a public online hiring website,” the Department of Justice said in their statement.

Closing arguments to begin in Trump hush money trial
Thirty-six days ago, prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney's office set out to convince a jury of twelve New Yorkers that Donald Trump broke the law by hiding damaging information from voters. During closing arguments Tuesday, they'll attempt to convince that jury to convict the former president on 34 felony counts -- a historic decision in what could be the only one of Trump's criminal cases that reaches a verdict before the 2024 election. Prosecutors built their case across four weeks of testimony, calling 20 witnesses including Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress whose hush money payment sits at the center of the case; Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer who made the payment to Daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election; and multiple Trump Organization employees who helped orchestrate Cohen's alleged reimbursement in 2017.

'General Hospital' actor Johnny Wactor dies at 37 after being shot in Los Angeles
"General Hospital" actor Johnny Wactor, who was known for playing Brando Corbin in the beloved ABC soap opera, died after being shot on Saturday. Wactor was shot after he interrupted three male suspects who were allegedly attempting to remove a catalytic converter from his vehicle, his mother, Scarlett Wactor, told KABC-TV Los Angeles. The incident happened around 3:25 am PT on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

2 inmates on the run after escaping Louisiana jail, police say
Police in Louisiana said Monday they caught two of the four inmates who escaped from jail over the weekend, unbeknownst to the guards who were supposed to be watching them. Omarion Hookfin, 19; Avery Guidry, 19; Jamarcus Cyprian, 20, and Travon Johnson, 21, who were all incarcerated at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, escaped through a weak portion of the jail's chain-linked fence on Saturday and Sunday, Chief Jimmy Travis of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office told reporters during a news conference Monday. The jail's officials did not know about the breakouts until they received a phone call Sunday afternoon from a family member of one of the escapees, Travis said.

The Kuwait Specialized Hospital in Rafah, one of its largest, announced that the hospital had been out of service due to the expansion of the Israeli military operation on the city and the repeated and deliberate targeting of the hospital's vicinity, hospital's director Suhaib Al-Hams said Sunday. The Israeli occupation repeatedly targeted the hospital, the most recent of which was targeting the hospital gate, which led to the death of two of the staff working there, as well as the injury of five members of the medical staff in a previous targeting, Al-Hams said in a press statement received by Sanad News Agency.

Bill Walton, the legendary basketball player and sportscaster, died Monday at 71, according to the NBA. The two-time NBA champion -- first for the Portland Trail Blazers in 1977, and then for the Boston Celtics in 1986 -- died of cancer and was surrounded by family, the NBA said. Kilauea, active Hawaiian volcano, could erupt like a 'stomp-rocket toy,' new study suggests
Scientists may have found the mechanism behind the unusual explosive eruptions seen at one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Kilauea, located at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, experienced at least a dozen instances in 2018 when lava was spewing from the crater like a "stomp-rocket toy," a children's toy that involves launching a rocket into the air after stomping on the release mechanism, according to a paper published Monday in Nature Geosciences. The unusual eruption behavior likely contributed to the severity of that lava flow that year that destroyed more than 600 properties, Josh Crozier, a geologist at Stanford University and lead researcher of the study, told ABC News.

As tornado season ramps up, more people are turning to private home shelters to survive
When a powerful EF-4 tornado ripped through Greenfield, Iowa, last week, TJ Oder, the chief of the town's volunteer fire department, said his house took a direct hit. Oder said that when the twister struck, he was helping to prepare a triage center to treat injured neighbors and get them to hospitals while his family members were hunkered down in his personal shelter. At least four people were killed and 35 were injured in the Greenfield twister, but throughout the area, many lives were saved due to people being close to a public shelter as the twister bore down or having one like Oder just steps away in their own home, officials said.

Nicki Minaj arrested in Amsterdam, claims officials 'took my bags without consent'
Nicki Minaj was arrested by police at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Saturday, a Dutch National Police source confirmed to ABC News. The Dutch police, in a statement, said a 41-year-old woman was arrested for trying to leave the country while in "possession of soft drugs, which is prohibited." The police agency later said she had been released from custody.

Multiple people killed, dozens injured in Russian airstrike on Ukraine shopping center
Russian forces struck a Ukrainian shopping center in Kharkiv on Saturday, leaving four people dead and 38 people wounded according to local officials. Oleh Synyehubov, the Kharkiv governor, said on Ukrainian television that they have so far identified 16 people as officially missing. Synyehubov also said there was a second strike in Kharkiv that injured 12 people, including a 13-year-old boy.
