Infant takes 1st breaths on her own after undergoing rare double lung transplant
A 6-month-old girl born with a life-threatening lung disorder is now breathing on her own thanks to a rare double lung transplant. Kylie Overfield was placed on a ventilator immediately after her birth on Nov. 10, 2023, due to surfactant B deficiency, a rare genetic condition that causes abnormalities in the lining of the lung tissue, making breathing difficult, according to the National Library of Medicine. In Kylie's case, the condition was so severe that doctors feared she wouldn't survive long after her birth, which came on a Friday, according to her mom, Ashley Overfield.

Star golfer Scottie Scheffler arrested prior to start of PGA Championship's 2nd round: Report
Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, was reportedly arrested Friday for allegedly driving past a police roadblock at the Valhalla Golf Club, according to ESPN. Around 5 a.m. a man was fatally struck by a shuttle bus as he tried to cross a road near the course of the PGA championship, according to a statement released by Louisville Metro Police Department. The roadblocks and confusion over the accident allegedly led Scheffler to drive past police who were on site, according to reports from ESPN.

The fate of the endangered Florida panther, also known as the North American cougar, could depend on a network of wildlife corridors and panther crossings currently being established by conservation groups and state officials. The North American cougar once roamed throughout the southern U.S., Elise Bennett, Florida and Caribbean director at the Center for Biological Diversity, told ABC News. The species has even been documented as far north as Louisiana, Tiffany Burns, senior director of animal programs at ZooTampa, told ABC News.

When famed stylist and hair care executive Fabio Sementilli’ was found him stabbed to death on the patio of his home in Woodland Hills, California, on January 23, 2017, the crime was assumed to be a burglary gone wrong. “However this went down,” Fabio Sementilli’s sister Mirella Sementilli told ABC News, “it was executed brilliantly because we were deceived.” A monthslong investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department would result in Sementilli’s wife Monica and her lover Robert Baker arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Krystal Kauffman, a gig worker, spent one workday watching footage captured by a camera that had been placed on a baby's head, labeling objects as they came into view, she said. Over nearly a decade, Kauffman has performed thousands of tiny tasks that have helped companies assemble the immense data sets used to train artificial intelligence (AI), she said. "It's supposed to look like these products are magic," Kauffman, who performs tasks on the platform Amazon Mechanical Turk and advocates for workers as a lead organizer for the group Turkopticon, told ABC News.

A "catastrophic" mental health crisis has unfolded in Gaza, affecting both civilians and humanitarian workers, amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, according to international aid organizations. Since Hamas launched a surprise terrorist attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and Israel responded by declaring war, more than 35,173 people have been killed in Gaza and more than 79,061 have been injured, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health. The physical toll of the war has been documented in photographs and videos with Gazans suffering from severe injuries, including the loss of limbs, and malnutrition due to the shortage of food and clean water, as well as a "full-blown famine" that has struck northern Gaza.

Alec Baldwin's motion to dismiss charge in 'Rust' shooting to be heard in court
Alec Baldwin's motion to dismiss his involuntary manslaughter charge stemming from the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of "Rust" will go before a New Mexico judge on Friday. The actor was practicing a cross-draw in a church on the set of the Western film when the Colt .45 revolver fired a live round, fatally striking 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin, 66, who was also a producer on the film, was indicted by a grand jury on involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hutchins' death earlier this year, after prosecutors previously dropped the charge.

The man convicted of breaking into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's home and attacking her husband Paul Pelosi with a hammer will receive his federal prison sentence on Friday. David DePape was convicted in November 2023 for the Oct. 28, 2022, break-in and attack at the Pelosis' San Francisco home. DePape admitted that he was looking for Nancy Pelosi to question her about Russian influence on the 2016 election and planned to hold her hostage, but only Paul Pelosi was home when he broke in.

Authorities continue hunt for 2 people who committed 'archeological theft' at US national park
Law enforcement officers are still looking for two suspects they say committed “archeological theft” at a U.S national park in Utah two days after they asked for help from the public. The incident occurred on March 23 at Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah, at the Cave Spring Cowboy Camp in the Needles district of the park at approximately 5:30 p.m. when security cameras captured two people enter “a signed-as-closed area, removed artifacts from a cabinet, and handled historic harnesses in a manner that had potential to damage them,” according to a statement from the National Park Service released on Wednesday. “National parks are some of the most special, treasured, and protected areas of our country,” authorities said.

4 day care workers arrested for lacing children's food with melatonin: Police
A day care owner and three of her employees have been arrested after allegedly sprinkling melatonin on children's food, police say. The incident began in November 2023 when police in Manchester, New Hampshire, received a report alleging "unsafe practices going on in an in-home daycare at 316 Amory Street," which led to a lengthy investigation, according to a statement released by the Manchester Police Department on Thursday. "Through the investigation, police determined that the children's food was being sprinkled with melatonin without their parent's knowledge or consent," authorities said regarding the case.

Father, 2 siblings set to graduate from college killed after small plane crashes in Tennessee
Three people have died after a small plane appears to have broken up in-flight before crashing in Tennessee, authorities said. The aircraft -- a 1966 Beech V35 -- crashed near Franklin around noon Wednesday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident. Witnesses reported seeing both wings go backward and the plane "going violently out of control" before the crash, NTSB aviation accident investigator Aaron McCarter told reporters during a press briefing on Thursday.

Tensions at the University of California, Irvine campus escalated Wednesday as a group of several hundred pro-Palestinian protesters entered a lecture hall and surrounded the building, according to school officials. A judge in California ruled that a pro-Palestinian demonstrator will stand trial in the death of a Jewish man who was counter-protesting on a street in Thousand Oaks last year. Paul Kessler, a 69-year-old Jewish man, died from blunt-force head trauma following a confrontation with a counterprotester, amid simultaneous pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations last November, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office previously said. Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji is accused of striking Paul Kessler with a megaphone, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

Commuters on a Southern California freeway experienced an unexpected delay earlier this week when a bear wandered onto the road, bringing traffic to a halt. The bear incident happened Tuesday on the 14 freeway near Newhall Avenue. An Environmental Protection Agency whistleblower told ABC News the United States EPA wasted critical time gathering data in the days immediately following the catastrophic derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, last year. Senior research scientist Robert Kroutil alleged the EPA delayed days in deploying one of its most effective tools in assessing chemical incidents: The Airborne Spectral Photometric Environmental Collection Technology (ASPECT) plane. Kroutil helped develop the EPA's ASPECT plane – a one-of-one specialized aircraft equipped with radiological and infrared sensors.
