'Kimberly Akimbo,' Jodie Comer and Sean Hayes win big at 2023 Tony Awards

The biggest names in Broadway gathered Sunday to honor the best in theater at the 2023 Tony Awards.

Held at the United Palace theater in New York City, the 76th annual ceremony aired live and -- as host Ariana DeBose noted during her opening remarks -- unscripted, due to the ongoing WGA writers strike.

The musical "Kimberly Akimbo" took home the most Tonys of the night, winning five awards, including best musical, best book of a musical, best original score (music and/or lyrics) written for the theatre, best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical for Victoria Clark and best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical for Bonnie Milligan.

"Leopoldstadt" took home four Tonys, including wins for best play, best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play for Brandon Uranowitz, best costume design of a play and best direction of a play.

Other notable wins included "Will & Grace" alum Sean Hayes winning bet performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for "Good Night, Oscar," "Killing Eve" alum Jodie Comer winning best performance by an actress in a leading role in a play for "Prima Facie," and J. Harrison Ghee winning best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for "Some Like It Hot."

North Korea sends balloons full of manure and trash over the border to South Korea
Around 260 air balloons carrying bags of manure and trash have been spotted across South Korea on Wednesday after they were sent over the border from North Korea. The incident is reportedly stems from an incident on Sunday when North Korea criticized civic groups in Seoul for sending propaganda leaflets across the border first and subsequently threatened to send filth balloons back to South Korea as a countermeasure. The regime in North Korea has long complained about this type of action as civic groups have been known to send rice, essential medicine and leaflets accusing the North Korean regime of dictatorship.

Person killed after being sucked into plane's turbine engine on runway
A person has died after being sucked up into the running turbine engine of a plane at Amsterdam’s international airport, officials said. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines made the announcement on Wednesday that a “person ended up in a running aircraft engine” of a plane that was bound for Billund, Denmark at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, according to KLM. “A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine,” KLM said following the incident.

Bystander shot in gunfire exchange between suspect, police at Kroger grocery store near Cincinnati
A bystander was shot as a suspect and police exchanged gunfire at a Kroger grocery store just outside of Cincinnati, on Wednesday, police said. Authorities were dispatched to the Kroger on Springdale Road just before 4 p.m. ET following a report of "shots fired," according to the Colerain Police Department in Colerain Township, Ohio. The suspect then pointed the weapon at officers "and gunfire ensued," he said.

On Wednesday, the first day of its "Music Icons" sale at the Hard Rock Cafe New York, Julien's Auctions sold a Framus 12-string hootenanny acoustic guitar used by John Lennon to record several Beatles classics for a whopping $2.9 million. According to the company, that makes it the most expensive Beatles guitar ever to sell at auction. The guitar was used by Lennon to record songs for their 1965 studio album "Help!" and film of the same name, helping create some of the band's biggest hits of the '60s.

NTSB investigating after deadly explosion rocks downtown Youngstown, Ohio
The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday it is investigating a deadly natural gas explosion that rocked downtown Youngstown, Ohio. The explosion occurred near Central Square on Tuesday afternoon, police said, as they urged people to avoid the area. A massive volcanic eruption at the Sundhnúkur crater in Iceland on Wednesday spewed lava over 160 feet into the air, officials announced. The crater is located on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland, where authorities evacuated the seaside town of Grindavík, including the country's biggest tourist attraction, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Most of the 4,000 residents of Grindavik were permanently evacuated in November 2023 due to ongoing volcanic activity.

Nearly two decades after the launch of the first HPV vaccine, mounting evidence shows that people who got vaccinated are dramatically less likely to develop HPV-related cancers in adulthood. All charges have been dismissed against star golfer Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested while in Louisville, Kentucky, for the PGA Championship earlier this month. Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell addressed the court Wednesday on a motion to dismiss the charges after he said his office conducted a "thorough" review of the case and could not proceed with the prosecution. Scheffler's characterization of the incident as a "big misunderstanding" was "corroborated by the evidence" and his actions "do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses," O'Connell said.
