Donald Trump's former White House counsel Pat Cipollone was subpoenaed Wednesday for a deposition by the House's Jan. 6 committee -- and his team is now engaging on the ultimate scope of the order for future testimony, sources say. "The Select Committee's investigation has revealed evidence that Mr. Cipollone repeatedly raised legal and other concerns about President Trump's activities on January 6th and in the days that preceded," the Jan. 6 committee's chair and vice-chair, Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson and Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney, said in a statement. Cipollone is evaluating the subpoena and his team is involved with the committee on the parameters surrounding an eventual closed-door deposition, sources close to him told ABC News.
A 20-year-old woman was shot to death while pushing a 3-month-old baby in a stroller on New York City's Upper East Side on Wednesday night, police said. The unidentified woman was pushing a baby stroller on Lexington Avenue and East 95th Street around 8:25 p.m. when a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt came up from behind and shot her in the head, ABC News New York station WABC reported. The suspect fled immediately afterward on foot, traveling east along East 95th Street, according to the NYPD.
A manhunt is underway in Alabama for a suspect who allegedly shot two Bibb County Sheriff's deputies, officials said. The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon on Highway 25 in the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area during the pursuit of a stolen vehicle, according to Bibb County District Attorney Michael Jackson. Authorities identified the suspect as 26-year-old Austin Patrick.
An abortion clinic with locations in four states was developing plans to expand its operations just as news broke that Roe v. Wade, the landmark U.S. case that enshrined abortion as a constitutional right, was overturned by the Supreme Court. Just The Pill, which was founded in 2020, provides reproductive health care services in Colorado, Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming. The services Just The Pill provides include medication abortion, which is an abortion procedure that uses a combination of pills to terminate a pregnancy.
Buckingham Palace will not publish any findings from its report into the handling of allegations Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, bullied members of staff. A senior palace source told reporters that this was to respect the confidentiality of those that spoke to the independent law firm which carried out the investigation. "The point of the review was to investigate how the allegations were handled and so looked at how we would improve the processes and procedures we have in place and to ensure that the policies are fit for purpose," said the source.
As chaos in the nation’s airports and airspace continues to wreak havoc during the busy summer season, many travelers are left wondering what their rights are during extreme flight delays and cancellations. Airlines canceled more than 2,000 flights over Memorial Day weekend and 2,800 flights between June 15 to 17, blaming bad weather and staffing issues across the system. Under federal law, consumers are entitled to a refund if the airline cancels a flight, regardless of the reason, and the consumer chooses not to travel.
An Amtrak train was traveling within the speed limit of 90 mph when it plowed into a dump truck at a Missouri railroad crossing, killing four people and injuring 150, officials said. Jennifer Homendy, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said Wednesday that after analyzing information from its event recorder, federal investigators have determined that the train was traveling 89 mph about a quarter-mile out from the crash, when the horn started blowing, and 87 mph at impact. The collision caused the train to completely derail, sending the locomotive and cars toppling onto their sides, according to the NTSB.
A group of students in Long Island, New York, went from walking the stage at their high school graduation on Friday to putting out a fire, minutes later. The six Port Jefferson High School students were identified by their principal, Eric Haruthunian, and Newsday as Ryan Parmegiani, Kasumi Layne-Stasik, Hunter Volpi, Andrew Patterson, Shane Hartig and Peter Rizzo.
Two U.S. Women's soccer stars have teamed up with Chipotle to create exclusive menu items with proceeds to benefit military families. The fast-casual restaurant chain announced this week it has enlisted Rose Lavelle and Sophia Smith from the U.S. Women's National Team, partnered with Folds of Honor, to support scholarships to families of fallen and disabled service members. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday detailed what is in gun safety legislation she will propose during a special state legislative session scheduled for Thursday. Hochul is set to propose a slew of ideas in response to last week's Supreme Court decision to strike down a state law that had limited the concealed carry of handguns in public to people who had "proper cause." The legislation will define a number of "sensitive locations" where people will not be allowed to carry concealed guns, Hochul said.
The latest quake comes after a 3.4 earthquake hit the area, 6.4 miles from Elgin, on Sunday. More than 3,000 people reported feeling Wednesday’s quake, according to USGS. Due to the shallow nature of the earthquake, it could be felt in a wider area, the agency said.
The director of a Florida art museum has been ousted amid a federal investigation into the authenticity of more than two dozen paintings purportedly by the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat that were on view in the institution's blockbuster show. The exhibition, "Heroes and Monsters," at the Orlando Museum of Art, has been under scrutiny since a New York Times report published upon its opening in February raised questions about the authenticity of the pieces, including one that featured a FedEx cardboard shipping box with a typeface that an expert said wasn't used until after the artist's death in 1988. On Friday, days before the exhibition was scheduled to end, the FBI Art Crime Team based out of Los Angeles executed a federal search warrant at the museum as part of a federal investigation, an FBI spokesperson said.
A scientist in southern Chile believes he's found the world's oldest tree, a Patagonian cypress he says is over 5,000 years old -- but not everyone is ready to hand the record over yet. Jonathan Barichivich, a scientist who has studied the tree, named the Alerce Milenario, for two years, told the journal Science that his research proves the 100-foot tall, 13-foot wide tree is the world's oldest. Adam Millward, managing editor at Guinness World Records, told ABC News that he has spoken with the organization's dendrochronology expert about the new findings, and the Patagonian cypress has already been deemed the world's second-oldest species, so there is "no denying its longevity potential."
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, the most senior member of the U.S. Supreme Court's liberal wing, said he will officially step down from the bench at noon on Thursday, and the court announced he will then swear in his former law clerk -- Ketanji Brown Jackson -- to take his place on the bench, becoming the nation's first Black female justice. "It has been my great honor to participate as a judge in the effort to maintain our Constitution and the Rule of Law," Breyer wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden dated Wednesday. Breyer's retirement fulfills the wish of Democrats who lobbied for his exit to make way for Biden's first nominee to the court.
Short-term rental giant Airbnb has issued a permanent global ban on parties following a string of shootings that have broken out nationwide at properties it lists. "It developed into a bedrock community policy to support our Hosts and their neighbors," Airbnb said in its statement. Airbnb said violations of its party ban will result in "serious consequences" for guests, including suspension of accounts or full removal from the platform.
The widow of a Chinese food delivery worker who was fatally shot is speaking out after her husband's alleged killer was released on bail. Glenn Hirsch, 51, was arrested in New York City on June 1 for the alleged murder of Zhiwen Yan, a Chinese food delivery worker, who was shot in the chest on April 30 while riding his scooter in the neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens. "I thank the District Attorney and the police for their efforts in obtaining and enforcing an order of protection for me, and I have faith that we will get justice for my husband, Zhiwen Yan."
Lev Parnas, the one-time associate of former President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, was sentenced Wednesday to 20 months in prison for pumping foreign money into U.S. elections. Parnas, who became briefly known for helping Giuliani investigate Joe Biden's dealings in Ukraine in the lead-up to the 2020 election, was convicted last year of using funds from a wealthy Russian businessman, Andrey Muraviev, to make unlawful donations to American political candidates that Parnas thought could help with his nascent marijuana business. The defense sought leniency and a sentence of time served, while federal prosecutors in Manhattan said Parnas deserved eight years in prison.
Ten gun distributors sold tens of thousands of illegal, unfinished frames and receivers later fashioned into untraceable handguns and assault-style rifles in violation of a New York public nuisance law, a new lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges. The defendants include some of the nation's leading gun distributors, including Brownells, Indie Guns, Primary Arms and Rock Slide. The lawsuit, filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accused the gun distributors of flooding the streets with ghost guns -- firearms that come packaged in parts, which can be bought online and assembled without much of a trace.
