Israel-Gaza live updates: Israeli war cabinet disbanded, official says
As the Israel-Hamas war continues, negotiations are apparently stalled to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist organization, and Israeli forces continue to launch incursions in the southern Gazan town of Rafah ahead of a possible large-scale invasion. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement Tuesday criticized the U.S. for withholding certain weapons. Netanyahu said when he met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Israel recently, he told Blinken, "It's inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunitions to Israel."

Migrant taken into custody as person of interest in rape of 13-year-old in Queens park
A person of interest is in custody in connection with the rape of a 13-year-old girl in a Queens park last week, police sources told ABC News. The person, a 25-year-old Ecuadorian migrant who entered the U.S. illegally in June 2021, was picked up overnight after community members recognized him from a photo and video released by police, according to the police sources. NYPD Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry praised the community efforts that led to the person of interest being taken into custody in an interview with New York ABC station WABC.

Appeals court denies Trump request to lift gag order in hush money case
New York's highest court on Tuesday declined to take up a challenge to the limited gag order imposed on former President Donald Trump by the judge who oversaw his criminal hush money trial. The New York Court of Appeals rejected Trump's appeal "upon the ground that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved." Judge Juan Merchan prohibited Trump from discussing witnesses, jurors and others associated with his criminal trial, which ended in a conviction last month.

2nd largest school district to vote on cellphone and social media ban for students
The nation's second-largest school district is considering a possible cellphone and social media ban for over 429,000 K-12 students during school days. The Los Angeles Unified School District is voting on the proposed ban Tuesday morning, one day after U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy called for an immediate warning label on social media platforms in a New York Times op-ed, similar to warnings on cigarette packs mandated by Congress in the 1960s. If approved, the school district would develop and present new cellphone and social media policies within 120 days, or by the fall semester, that would forbid students by the spring semester of the 2024-2025 school year from using cellphones and social media platforms during the school day.

A 14-year-old fatally shot a 13-year-old girl. Now his father is on trial.
The trial began this week against William Brown, 39, the father of the 14-year-old boy who fatally shot a 13-year-old girl nearly a year ago. Brown is the first person to be charged under the Bennie Hargrove Gun Safety Act, aka "Bennie's Law," a New Mexico law that allows adults to be held criminally liable for negligently allowing a minor to access a firearm. The teen was tried for second-degree murder, as well as tampering with evidence and assaulting a police officer, but the case ended with a hung jury in March.

Dangerous heat wave spans New York to Chicago: Latest maps and temperatures
Heat alerts are in effect in at least 19 states in the Midwest and Northeast, with some areas expecting to see their hottest days in 30 years. Record highs were shattered Monday in the Midwest and Northeast: Toledo, Ohio, hit 99 degrees; Chicago reached 97 degrees; Cleveland recorded 96 degrees; and Syracuse, New York, soared to 94 degrees. On Tuesday, temperatures are forecast to climb to a scorching 97 degrees in Pittsburgh and Syracuse; 93 degrees in Chicago and Detroit; 92 in Washington, D.C.; and 90 in Boston.

Club Q shooter changes plea to guilty on federal hate crime charges
The shooter who killed five and injured over a dozen more at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2022 accepted a plea deal Tuesday in connection with federal hate crimes charges. Aldrich initially pleaded not guilty. Federal prosecutors are recommending a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be followed by a 190-year sentence of imprisonment, according to court documents filed on June 4.

Boeing whistleblower steps forward ahead of CEO's testimony in Washington, senator says
Sen. Richard Blumenthal's office on Tuesday said a current Boeing employee has come forward as a whistleblower, an announcement that comes hours before the airplane manufacturer's chief executive is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill. The senator's office identified the employee as Sam Mohawk, a quality assurance inspector for Boeing in Renton, Washington. Mohawk alleges that Boeing is cutting corners by losing track of parts that have been labeled as non-conforming or not up to design standards, according to Blumenthal.

Biden to announce relief for some undocumented spouses of US citizens, 'Dreamers'
President Joe Biden will announce on Tuesday two new executive actions that could provide relief to thousands of undocumented immigrants who have been in the country for several years. The first action aims to streamline the process through which undocumented spouses and undocumented children of U.S. citizens apply for lawful permanent residence. The policy will allow noncitizen spouses married to U.S. citizens to apply to live and work in the United States legally without having to leave the country.

Wildfire near LA spreads to more than 15,600 acres, 20% containment
A wind-whipped Southern California wildfire that started over the weekend ballooned to more than 15,600 acres on Monday, prompting the evacuation of more than 1,000 campers from a park, closing a popular recreation area on Father's Day and threatening a major freeway in and out of Los Angeles, authorities said. The Post Fire, which began after 2 p.m. PT on Saturday near Gorman, California, in the Tejon Pass area of Los Angeles County, saw flames jump from 5,000 acres to 14,625 acres by Sunday evening, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). Firefighters managed to increase containment from 2% on Sunday to 8% on Monday, eventually reaching 20% containment Monday night, according to Cal Fire.

Carrie Underwood, family and pets safe after house fire
Carrie Underwood and her family are safe after a fire on her family's property, a spokesperson for the singer told "Good Morning America" in a statement. The fire, which broke out on Sunday night at Underwood's Tennessee property in Leiper's Fork/Hillsboro in Williamson County, was quickly contained, according to the statement, and "there was no fire damage to the primary residence, and the family and their pets were unharmed." According to a media release from Williamson County fire/rescue, all eight of its stations were dispatched to a fire alarm in District 21 (Leiper's Fork/Hillsboro) and one crew arrived on scene "to find flames coming from the garage."

US attorney 'declined' to prosecute over threat to congressman, letter claims
The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana declined to prosecute a man who threatened to kill an Indiana congressman and his family, according to a letter obtained by ABC News. Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) was left threatening messages by Aaron Thompson, who was later sentenced to two years of probation by the local district attorney in Indiana, but the new letter raises questions about why the U.S. Attorney, which normally handles threats to members of Congress, did not prosecute the case. Thompson said in one threatening voicemail, according to the letter.

Federal judge pauses law giving law enforcement ability to arrest migrants in Iowa illegally
A federal judge in Iowa paused a state law giving local law enforcement the ability to arrest migrants in the state illegally, saying it is not the state's job, but rather the job of the federal government to enforce immigration laws. Signed into law in April, SF2340 authorizes local law enforcement officials to arrest migrants who have previously been deported or removed from the country, or who have been denied entry in the past. It is similar to a Texas law, which gives that state's law enforcement similar powers.
