Millions of people in states from the Great Plains to the Midwest were under the threat of tornadoes Tuesday afternoon, including Iowa where several twisters touched down near Des Moines. The National Weather Service issued tornado watches for parts of Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas and Oklahoma through Tuesday night. Nearly the entire state of Iowa was under a "Particularly Dangerous Situation," according to the National Weather Service, which issued several tornado warnings near Des Moines.

1 dead, 6 critically injured amid 'severe' turbulence on Singapore Airlines flight, carrier says
One person is dead and dozens others injured after a Singapore Airlines flight encountered "severe" turbulence, the airline said in a social media post. The Boeing 777-300ER departed London's Heathrow Airport on Monday with 221 passengers and 18 crew members on board, according the airline. The flight, SQ 321, encountered turbulence about 90 minutes from its destination of Singapore and was diverted to Bangkok, the carrier said.

Giuliani agrees to cease election fraud accusations against 2 former election workers
Rudy Giuliani agreed to cease accusations of election fraud against Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, the two former Georgia election workers who won a $148 million judgment after a judge found the former New York City mayor guilty of defaming the two women. On Tuesday, Giuliani "agreed to never again accuse either [Ruby] Freeman or [Shaye] Moss of engaging in any wrongdoing in connection with the 2020 election," according to attorneys for the two women. "Today ends [Giuliani's] efforts to profit off of lies about these two heroes of American democracy," said Michael Gottlieb, an attorney for the two women.

Fani Willis, judge in Trump's Georgia election case, projected to win primary races
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Judge Scott McAfee -- both of whom have been key players in the election interference case against former President Donald Trump and his allies -- will win their respective primary races in Georgia's primary election on Tuesday the Associated Press projects. Willis beat Atlanta attorney Christian Wise Smith in the Democratic primary; McAfee defeated attorney Robert Patillo in a nonpartisan election.

Pentagon: Russia likely launched counter space weapon into low Earth orbit last week
The United States has assessed that Russia launched what is likely a counter space weapon last week that's now in the same orbit as a U.S. government satellite, Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed Tuesday. "What I'm tracking here is on May 16, as you highlighted, Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we that we assess is likely a counter space weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit,” Ryder said when questioned by ABC News about the information, which was made public earlier Tuesday by Robert Wood, deputy U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday took aim at Donald Trump for the since-deleted video reposted to his social media site Truth Social referencing a "Unified Reich" if reelected. House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Tuesday that he's moving ahead with an invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress despite an International Criminal Court prosecutor saying he would apply for a warrant to arrest Netanyahu for war crimes. Johnson said that an invitation hasn't been sent out yet because he was awaiting word from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to join the invitation.

Former President Donald Trump is on trial in New York City, where he is facing felony charges related to a 2016 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Trump last April pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment charging him with falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment his then-attorney Michael Cohen made to Daniels in order to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election. Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass, at the end of the afternoon's pre-charge conference, argued that the jury's instructions should include that retainer agreements are legally required for lawyers to begin conducting work for a client.

Special counsel Jack Smith appears to have suspected additional efforts by former President Donald Trump to obstruct the government's investigation of his handling of classified documents, a newly unsealed court filing revealed Tuesday. The opinion was released as an exhibit in filings responding to Trump's efforts to have the case dismissed, ahead of two hearings Wednesday related to Trump aide Walt Nauta's efforts to dismiss the related charges against him. Trump pleaded not guilty last June to 37 criminal counts related to his handling of classified materials after leaving the White House, after prosecutors said he repeatedly refused to return hundreds of documents containing classified information ranging from U.S. nuclear secrets to the nation's defense capabilities, and took steps to thwart the government's efforts to get the documents back.

Judge threatens to mute Giuliani during arraignment in Arizona fake electors case
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, several allies of former President Donald Trump and alleged fake electors pleaded not guilty in Maricopa County court Tuesday for their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Arizona. Former Trump lawyer Christina Bobb, Arizona state Sen. Anthony Kern, former Arizona Republican Party chair Kelli Ward, and her husband Michael Ward were also among those arraigned today.

Kansas physicians challenge law requiring public release of patients' reasons for abortions
Kansas physicians are legally challenging a new state law that would require them to ask and publicly report patients' reasons for seeking abortion care as well as other personal information. A lawsuit claims the law "directly interferes with Kansans' bodily autonomy and their fundamental right to make their own decisions about health care," according the Center for Reproductive Rights, which is representing the physicians. The new law is lawmakers' latest attempt to regulate the procedure after Kansas voters, defying expectations, voted to protect abortion rights by upholding a state constitutional right to abortion -- with an overwhelming majority -- in a 2022 ballot initiative.

As the Israel-Hamas war crosses the seven-month mark, renewed negotiations are underway to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist organization, as Israeli forces continue to prepare for an apparent invasion of the southern Gazan town of Rafah. After widespread condemnation, Israel has reversed course and returned equipment seized from The Associated Press. The equipment was seized and they took down their AP's live shot of northern Gaza from Israel Tuesday, citing a controversial new media law.

North Carolina lawmaker fights state anti-masking legislation
There's a bill that's currently making its way through the North Carolina General Assembly, the official name of which is House Bill 237, also known as the 'Unmasking Mobs and Criminals' bill. To do so, it would effectively repeal "from certain laws" a pandemic-era exemption that permitted mask-wearing in public for health reasons, with violators subject to arrest. The Republican-majority North Carolina Senate passed the legislation on Wednesday by a 30-15 vote, sending it back for consideration to the GOP-majority state House, where it could still be changed.

STIs, including syphilis, gonorrhea, increasing globally: WHO
The number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) around the world is increasing and is a "major concern" for health officials, according to a new report published Tuesday from the World Health Organization (WHO). The report found four curable STIs -- chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and trichomoniasis -- are responsible for more than 1 million infections daily among adults between ages 15 and 49. Cases of syphilis, in particular, have been rising rapidly.

Former student shares memories of school integration fight 70 years ago
A Virginia woman who was at the forefront of school desegregation is sharing her experiences, and the hatred she endured, 65 years later. In February 1959, then-14-year-old Betty Kilby stepped into the history books as one of the 21 Black students who first attended her formerly segregated local high school, responding to the U.S. Supreme Court's unanimous Brown v. Board of Education decision fewer than five years earlier declaring "separate but equal" to be unconstitutional, paving the way for the racial integration of public schools in America. On their radios and televisions at home, Kilby and her friends heard parents and governors say that what they were doing was wrong.
