The murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd has put a spotlight on law enforcement training, as his former supervisors, trainers, and counterparts take the stand to testify. Chauvin’s defense attorney, Eric Nelson, opened the trial by telling jurors that the neck restraint he used on Floyd was “exactly what he had been trained to do over the course of his 19-year career.” Retired Minneapolis Police Department Sgt. David Pleoger -- Chauvin's supervisor at the time of Floyd's death -- testified that “when Mr. Floyd was no longer offering up any resistance to the officers, they could have ended their restraint.”
The Senate will take its first step aimed at combatting the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes Wednesday in what could prove to be an increasingly rare bipartisan Senate effort. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the Senate will vote Wednesday on whether to begin debate on a bill, sponsored by Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, that would take relatively modest steps to equip law enforcement and communities to better deal with the rise in attacks against Asian American and Pacific Islanders. "In America an attack on one group is an attack on all of us," Schumer said Tuesday.

Schools that had other vaccine options on hand said they would reschedule students to get Pfizer or Moderna shots -- but students would then have to figure out how to get their second shot in three to four weeks if they planned to be home for the summer by then. While this could be a potential inconvenience for students, finding a second dose elsewhere is also likely possible as vaccine supply continues to increase nationwide.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott announced at a press conference Tuesday that Officer Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, had submitted her resignation effective immediately. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon also submitted his resignation Tuesday.

Maryland State Police are investigating a trooper-involved fatal shooting in Leonardtown that ended in the death of a 16-year-old. A uniformed Maryland state trooper then arrived at the scene and confronted a male teenager, who has now been identified as Peyton Ham. The Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack shared the news of the shooting on Facebook Tuesday afternoon, saying a trooper had responded to a report of a possibly armed man.

Officer Rusten Sheskey was acting "within policy" when he fired seven times toward Jacob Blake, a Black man, last year, the Kenosha, Wisconsin, Police Department said. Sheskey, who is white, will not be disciplined for his use of force and is now back on the job after returning from administrative leave on March 31, Chief Daniel Miskinis announced Tuesday. "Although this incident has been reviewed at multiple levels, I know that some will not be pleased with the outcome," Miskinis said in a statement.
Paul Flores, a former classmate, has been arrested in connection with the murder and 1996 disappearance of California college student Kristin Smart, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday. Smart, a 19-year-old freshman at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo disappeared in the early hours of May 25, 1996, following a party near school. Flores' father, Ruben Flores, was charged Tuesday as an accessory to the murder, authorities said.

President Joe Biden has decided to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that prompted America's longest war, officials said Tuesday. There are roughly 2,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan now. Biden will announce the withdrawal on Wednesday, the White House said.
