Do you know all the best picture Oscar winners in history?
The Oscar for best picture, as defined by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or AMPAS, is awarded to the best motion picture each year.
Some of the greatest films ever made have gone on to win best picture, beginning with "Wings" at the first Academy Awards and most recently with "Oppenheimer" at this year's 96th Academy Awards.
The category has gone by many names throughout the years, including outstanding picture, outstanding production, outstanding motion picture and best motion picture, before finally landing on its current iteration, best picture, which was first awarded to "Lawrence of Arabia" at the 35th Academy Awards.

Recipients of the award have changed over time. It was first given to the winning film's production company or studio before the rule changed for the 1951 Academy Awards onward to award the producer(s) credited on the film.
The number of nominees has also changed throughout history, with the current rule calling for 10 nominees each year.
Steven Spielberg currently holds the record for the most best picture nominations for an individual producer, according to A.frame, the digital magazine of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He has been nominated a total of 13 times, winning once thanks to "Schindler's List."

Protests at Columbia University against the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have been allegedly "co-opted" by what New York City police officials described as professional outside agitators bent on sowing chaos and violence. Top police brass said protesters unaffiliated with Columbia University have been escalating the violence. On Thursday morning, the NYPD said a preliminary analysis of the 282 people arrested Tuesday night at Columbia and the City College of New York 47% were not affiliated with either school.
Former President Donald Trump is on trial in New York City, where he is facing felony charges related to a 2016 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Trump last April pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment charging him with falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment his then-attorney Michael Cohen made to Daniels in order to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election. Following the contempt hearing, Keith Davidson, the former lawyer for Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, has returned to the stand to resume his testimony.
Kate Hudson is a mom of three and proud of her blended family. Hudson, 44, shares her eldest child Ryder with ex-husband Chris Robinson, 57. The "Bride Wars" star also is a mom to two other children: son Bingham, 12, whom she shares with ex Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani Rose, 5, whom she shares with fiance Danny Fujikawa.
Measurements for the canine-wearer's pulse, heart rate variability, temperature, respiration and activity are recorded and sent to the PetPace cloud in real-time, Asaf Dagan, chief scientist and cofounder of PetPace, the parent company of Animal Alerts, told ABC News. "The idea is that if we can track the behavior and the anxiety levels of animals...and then we use AI and machine learning advanced models to correlate that with geophysical data like earthquakes of different magnitudes," Dagan said. If all of the dogs respond in the same timeframe, the algorithm can likely identify a pattern that an earthquake may be on its way, Dagan said.
Airbnb is offering customers an opportunity to stay in famous homes and places such as a re-creation of the "Up" house from Pixar's 2009 animated movie. Photos show the "Up" house, home to the fictional Carl Fredricksen and his late wife Ellie, brought to life with photos of the couple and just like in the movie, held up by 8,000 balloons among the red rocks of Abiquiu, New Mexico. The "Up" house is part of Airbnb's new "Icons" series, launched May 1, with 11 special locations.
The focus of Donald Trump's criminal hush money trial is expected to shift Thursday morning from what witnesses are saying in the courtroom to what the former president has said when he leaves. Two days after Judge Juan Merchan held Trump in criminal contempt for nine violations of the limited gag order that prohibits statements about witnesses and others involved in the case, the judge is holding a hearing Thursday to determine whether to hold Trump in contempt again and fine him $4,000 for making four additional out-of-court statements about the jury and known witnesses in the trial.
China is set to launch the first-ever mission, known as Chang'e 6, on Friday to collect rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon. The lunar lander is scheduled to launch by rocket at 3:50 a.m. ET from the China National Space Administration's (CNSA) Wenchang Satellite Launch Center on the island of Hainan, located to the south of China, according to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
At least six people ranging between the ages of 3 to 19-years-old have been shot at an apartment complex in Fort Worth, Texas, police say. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the Fort Worth Police Department received a call and responded to a reported shooting at an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Las Vegas Trail in the western part of the city, according to a statement from the Forth Worth Police Department early Thursday morning. Officers immediately assisted in providing medical attention with the help of the Fort Worth Fire Department and MedStar, authorities said.
Princess Charlotte, the second child of Prince William and Kate, the Princess of Wales, is celebrating her 9th birthday. Kensington Palace on Thursday released a new photo taken by Kate in Windsor in the last few days, according to the palace. The young royal made her public debut just hours after her birth at St. Mary's Hospital in London.
Maternal mortality rates in the United States fell in 2022 after at least three years of continuous increases, new federal data shows. In 2022, 817 women in the U.S. died of maternal causes with a rate of 22.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the report published early Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. This is a drop from the 1,205 women that died in 2021 with a rate of 32.9 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
The Chicago Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force took Xavier L. Tate Jr. into custody on suspicion of the murder of Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca. Tate Jr. was found Wednesday night in the Chicago suburb of Glendale Heights, Illinois, police said. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said Huesca's death was the result of "an act of unconscionable gun violence in our city."
The Commission on Presidential Debates is pushing back against suggestions from the Trump campaign that it move its general debate calendar up -- standing firm in its decision to hold the first broadcast on Sept. 16, 2024. In a statement released on Wednesday, a day after Trump senior campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles released their own statement urging earlier debates, the commission correctly noted that its September event is the earliest it's ever conducted a debate. The previous record was set in 1980, when Republican Ronald Reagan and Independent John Anderson went head-to-head on Sept. 21.
A 14-year-old suspect is dead following a confrontation with police Wednesday after an active shooter was reported outside a Wisconsin middle school, sources told ABC News. The teen had approached Mount Horeb Middle School with what appeared to be a long gun, the sources said. The suspect was a male student in the Mount Horeb Area School District, according to Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul.
The Arizona Senate on Wednesday voted to repeal a strict, Civil War-era abortion ban that was recently ruled enforceable by the state Supreme Court. Two Republican senators, T.J. Shope and Shawnna Bolick, joined the 14 Democrats in the minority and the bill passed 16-14, over vocal GOP objection. Ahead of her vote, Bolick took a broadly anti-abortion position on the floor -- explaining in detail the three difficult pregnancies she had herself, including the story of her own miscarriage -- but she voted with Democrats, suggesting the repeal of the stricter ban might weaken support for a Democratic-led ballot initiative in November to broaden abortion access further.
A reality TV star's decision to talk about his experience as a new dad is shining a light on a lesser-known topic, paternal postpartum depression. Leroy Garrett, a competitor on "The Challenge: All Stars," shared in an episode that he struggled with his mental health after the birth of his son Kingston Lee nearly two years ago. Garrett and his fiancee Kam Williams, also a contestant on the Paramount+ show, share Kingston Lee, 23 months, and a 9-week-old daughter named Aria.
President Joe Biden is facing pressure from Republicans to more forcefully speak out on the college protests unfolding nationwide in connection to the Israel-Hamas war. The campus unrest has created a political opportunity for Republicans, typically fractured on a number of issues but united against university leaders and as staunch supporters of Israel, to hold Biden's feet to the fire as he navigates a divided Democratic caucus. "When will the president himself, not his mouthpieces, condemn these hate-filled little Gazas?" GOP Sen. Tom Cotton said on Wednesday alongside other Republican senators at a news conference on Capitol Hill.
Vice President Kamala Harris hammered rival Donald Trump in a speech in Jacksonville, Florida, on Wednesday, the day the state's six-week abortion ban took effect, blaming the former president for the new restriction and saying it would be "even worse" if he wins a second term. "Just this week, in an interview, he said states have the right to monitor pregnant women to enforce these bans and states have the right to punish pregnant women for seeking out abortion care," Harris said, citing Trump's comments in a recent Time magazine story. "So, Florida, the contrast in this election could not be more clear."
UCLA became a focal point of nationwide campus protests early Wednesday morning when violent clashes broke out between protesters and counterprotesters as police allegedly stood by. One video appears to show an apparent pro-Israel protester throwing objects at the student encampment, while a separate video captures apparent pro-Israel protesters using planks of wood to hit protesters. Other counterprotesters can be seen spraying substances and throwing fireworks toward and into the encampment.
A group of bipartisan members of Congress are demanding answers from Formula 1 owner Liberty Media over why a U.S.-based team backed by racing legend Mario Andretti was excluded from the most prestigious motor racing series in the world. The FIA, which is Formula 1's governing body, initially accepted Andretti Global's push to join the grid. F1 cited several competitive concerns, and stated that "the presence of an 11th team would not, in and of itself, provide value to the championship."
The House passed the Antisemitism Awareness Act on Wednesday amid unrest on college campuses. The bill, which was introduced by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, passed 320-91. The measure was led by Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., and had 15 Democratic co-sponsors.
