How much do you think a club sandwich should cost? $12, maybe? $15?
Of course, much depends on where you are when you purchase this club sandwich. If you're in New York City, it'll cost you about $17.50, according to the 2013 Hotels.com Club Sandwich Index. But $17.50 is only a little more than half the price of the world's most expensive.
The index, Hotels.com said, uses this classic hotel staple as "a barometer of affordability." It canvassed the price of a chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayonnaise sandwich across 840 hotels globally for the real price of the classic club.
(Editor's note: Until this moment, I thought a club sandwich was made with turkey, not chicken. Also, no egg. Anyone else?)
So where will travelers pay the most? Geneva, Switzerland, with an average price of $30.45. Geneva unseated Paris, the home of 2012's priciest club sandwich, to take the top spot. Paris fell to No. 2 with an average price of $27.45. In No. 3 is Oslo, Norway, at $26.72.
Prices in New York City, the only U.S. city to make the list, ranged from a hefty $27 at the 5-star renowned St. Regis New York to a more modest $7.95 at a 3-star property elsewhere in Midtown. New York City didn't even crack the top 10 for prices; it came in at No. 13.
