"It also feels good to see positivity acknowledged," Hudson said.
The Chicago- born singer discussed the ongoing gun violence in the city that affected her personally when three members of her family died by gunfire in 2o08.
Hudson hopes to help expose children to a different way of life. "There's more to life than the block you live on," she said.
Hudson shared the emotional moment with her longtime fiancé, David Otunga and her sister, Julia. She posted a photo on Instagram of all three holding the trophy.

DeGeneres talked about one special viewer of her show.
"As a matter of fact, just yesterday I was talking to this lovely African-American woman and she told me she was single and she works 80 hours a week to get by and she looked forward to coming home every night and watching me."
"And that woman's name is Oprah Winfrey. I think I am doing something right."
Latifah, 43, debuted a sleek new bob haircut before the show. "Many thanks to my glam squad," the Favorite New Talk Show Host winner said on Instagram. Her talk show was recently renewed for a second season.
