Kim Kardashian’s Mom Says Daughter Should Keep 20.5-Carat Engagement Ring
Kim Kardashian spoke out on Australian TV overnight to say that "intuition" led her to end her 72-day-old marriage to NBA star Kris Humphries, while, across the world, her mom, Kris Jenner, revealed, for the first time, the changes she saw in her daughter prior to the couple's multimillion-dollar, reality-TV wedding.
"Kim hasn't been the Kim I know in a little bit and I wasn't sure if it was just the pressure of the big wedding," Jenner said today on "Good Morning America." "I saw her changing a little bit and it really concerned me."
Jenner described her 31-year-old reality-TV star daughter as "worried and not her happy self" in the days before and after the couple's Aug. 20 wedding that was attended by 450 people and watched by millions in a televised, two-part special on E!
Admitting she's still not sure of the "exact times" of Kardashian's decision to file for divorce, her personality changes, Jenner said, lead her to believe that her daughter's walk down the aisle, and walk away months later, was neither a sham nor a whim decision.
"I don't think she just woke up one day and had these feelings," Jenner, on "GMA" to promote her new memoir, said. "I think it's probably been a while coming perhaps and she just wasn't sure."
"She's a very smart girl and she loves really hard," she said. "For her to come to this decision so suddenly after 72 days has got to be devastating for her. She doesn't do anything lightheartedly."
Despite the warning signs, Jenner, 55, said the news that her daughter was ending her marriage to Humphries, 26, still came as a surprise.
"I couldn't have been hit with anything more shocking," she said. "We didn't have this big meeting to say this is what we're going to do and this is how we're going to behave. It just was a decision that she came to after a lot of heartache and pain."
Kardashian echoed her mom's comments on TV in Australia, where she is traveling with her sister, Khloe, to promote a line of handbags.
Appearing on the country's "Sunrise" TV program, Kardashian said of her decision, "I think when you know so deep in your heart that you just have to listen to your intuition, and follow your heart. There's no right or wrong thing to do."
The star also fought back against the withering criticism she has faced since filing for divorce Monday that her marriage to Humphries, 26, was for money, not love.
"I think what really just, I think, upsets me most is that there has been from the start so many rumors of money and dollar signs ... and so much of it not being true," Kardashian said.
While Kardashian announced on her blog Tuesday night that she would donate the money, reportedly in the millions, from the couple's wedding gifts to the non-profit Dream Foundation, left unsaid has been what would become of the 20.5-carat diamond engagement ring Humphries gave his once-bride.
Saying she "wants Kim back" and wants her "to be happy," Jenner revealed another piece of advice she has given to her daughter, regarding that famous ring.
"It's a gift. Keep your gift," she said. "I hate an 'Indian giver.'"
