The Memphis Police and Fire Departments are under heavy scrutiny following the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who was brutally beaten by police and died three days later. In a Tuesday hearing from the city council's Public Safety committee, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis and Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat were grilled about what went wrong on Jan. 7 when Nichols was pulled over for alleged reckless driving and died three days later, and what needs to be fixed in the department to prevent abuses in the future. Six officers have been fired from the police department, five of which have been criminally charged in connection with Nichols' death.
Back in 2021, Vernon Jackson, a licensed cosmetologist and author, had a big idea to raise money to donate haircuts to children with disabilities. Jackson had noticed that he would sometimes get customers at his Cincinnati shop, Noble Barber and Beauty, who needed more accommodations, and he wanted to help in some way. With that seed planted, Jackson's program, called The Gifted Event, grew and now provides free haircuts to children who have various medical conditions including autism, Down syndrome, and spina bifida.
Top House Republicans, including Speaker Kevin McCarthy, on Wednesday defended their members for heckling President Joe Biden and calling him a "liar" during Tuesday night's State of the Union address. While the evening saw GOP outbursts when Biden mentioned the southern border and fentanyl crisis, the shouts of "liar" happened when Biden, referring to the debt ceiling standoff, said "some Republicans" had proposed Social Security and Medicare programs be "sunset" every five years for renewal as part of a cost-cutting plan put out by Florida Sen. New Jersey community members and local elected leaders will gather Wednesday night at Epic Church International in Sayreville for a memorial service to honor Eunice Dwumfour, a New Jersey councilwoman who was shot and killed in an SUV near her home last week. Dwumfour -- the mother of a 12-year-old daughter and leader of her church -- sustained multiple gunshot wounds in her white SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed Wednesday that the U.S. assesses the alleged Chinese spy balloon shot down over the weekend was part of an expansive surveillance program aimed at gathering intelligence from targets around the globe. Speaking at a joint press conference with NATO's top official, Blinken said the administration was already sharing what the U.S. intelligence community uncovered with America's allies and Congress. "Senior administration officials are on the Hill this week, and we already shared information with dozens of countries around the world, both from Washington and from our embassies," Blinken said.
A 6-year-old boy named Brodie has started a protest for an idea a lot of people can probably get behind: a three-day weekend. In a video shared by his mom on Instagram, Brodie says that he has been "dreaming" of a three-day break from school. "Hey, I'm Brodie and this is for the government and I'm protesting," he says in the video.
Police have arrested a man in connection with the theft of 12 squirrel monkeys from a Louisiana zoo last month. Joseph Randall, 61, was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Officials are still investigating the whereabouts of the monkeys.

A New Mexico murder suspect is on the run after allegedly cutting off his ankle monitor, officials said. Joe Anderson was released from jail in January pending trial for first-degree murder, according to the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office. After requesting a bench warrant for his arrest on Tuesday, prosecutors learned that Anderson was missing, the district attorney's office said.
Two children are dead and six others injured after a city bus crashed into a day care Wednesday in Laval, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal. The driver of the bus, a 51-year-old man, has been arrested and faces charges of homicide and dangerous driving, police said at a press conference. The six other children did not suffer life-threatening injuries but have been transported to hospitals, police said.
A new Missouri bill takes Florida's controversial Parental Rights in Education law, dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" law, even further. The bill says that "no nurse, counselor, teacher, principal, contracted personnel, or other administrative official at a public or charter school shall discuss gender identity or sexual orientation with a minor student" unless they're a licensed mental health care provider and have a guardian's permission. The Missouri bill goes further than the Florida law, which restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity through kindergarten to grade 3, by not specifying an age group and explicitly barring discussions on these topics.

Geothermal energy, the process of using the heat from the inner cores of the earth to create power, is one of the most sustainable forms of energy, experts told ABC News. There are virtually no carbon emissions from this process once the infrastructure is in place, other than the diesel-powered pump required to bring the water and steam to the surface, Pete Stelling, a retired geology professor formerly at Western Washington University, told ABC News.
Rescue efforts are ongoing after a massive earthquake and powerful aftershocks caused widespread devastation across southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. In hard-hit Turkey, over 6,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed, officials said. Rescuers have been working feverishly in cold, wet weather while also facing the threat of aftershocks since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the region early Monday.

"Real Housewives of Orange County" alum Gretchen Rossi is mourning the death of fiancé Slade Smiley's son Grayson Smiley-Arroyo from cancer. "Our rational minds told us this day might come, but our hearts always held onto the hope that this day would not come to fruition," Rossi wrote in an Instagram post dated Feb. 7, sharing photos of herself and Smiley with Smiley-Arroyo throughout the years. Rossi said she and Smiley are "beyond devastated and heartbroken" over Smiley-Arroyo's passing at 22 after a lengthy battle with cancer, calling him "such a special human being."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Parliament in London on Wednesday, as the United Kingdom announced plans to increase its deliveries of "lethal aid." "I have come here to stand before you on behalf of the brave," Zelenskyy said after receiving a standing ovation from members of both Houses of Parliament. The trip underscored the United Kingdom's "unbreakable friendship" with Ukraine, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a statement.
