Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday slammed former President Donald Trump for insinuating President Joe Biden authorized his potential assassination during the FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago resort in August 2022 for confidential government material, pointing out that a similar Justice Department memo on the use of deadly force was also used in the FBI search of Biden's Wilmington, Delaware, home in January 2023. Garland called Trump's accusation, which came after documents were unsealed Tuesday by the special counsel investigating the ongoing federal probe into those missing documents, "false and extremely dangerous."

NOAA predicts record hurricane season for 2024
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued its highest-on record May hurricane forecast for the upcoming hurricane season. All categories of storms are expected to exceed the typical number seen every year, National Weather Service forecasters announced Thursday in a news conference for the 2024 hurricane outlook. NOAA scientists predict between 17 and 25 named storms, compared to an average of 14; between eight and 13 hurricanes, compared to an average of seven; and between four and seven major hurricanes, compared to an average of three.

Patrick Mahomes responds to Chiefs teammate Harrison Butker's controversial graduation speech
Kansas City Chiefs' star Patrick Mahomes is offering his first public response to a controversial commencement address delivered by his teammate, Harrison Butker. Mahomes defended Butker's character on Wednesday but said he did not "necessarily agree with" everything Butker said in his May 11th address to graduates at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts college in Atchison, Kansas. "There's certain things that he said that I don't necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is, and he is trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction," Mahomes said of Butker, according to ESPN.

NASA announces new launch date for Boeing's Starliner astronaut-crewed mission after several delays
NASA announced the new target launch date for the first astronaut-crewed flight into space aboard Boeing's Starliner after several delays. It comes after the launch of Starliner was delayed several times. The crewed flight test was tentatively scheduled for May 6, but was scrubbed after a problem with an oxygen valve on a rocket from United Launch Alliance (ULA), which manufactures and operates the rockets that launch spacecraft into orbit.

Mary Lou Retton says she has 'very long recovery' 7 months after hospital release
Mary Lou Retton is opening up about her health scare seven months after she was released from the hospital for severe pneumonia in October 2023. "I still have a hard time breathing and getting breath to speak," Retton said in a new interview with "Entertainment Tonight," adding that she remains on supplemental oxygen for now. The five-time Olympic medalist and former gymnastics star, 56, said her doctors "still don't know" what really happened to her back then when she was admitted into the intensive care unit for two weeks in the fall and that recently, she "had a bit of relapse awhile ago" but has bounced back.

Trump to hold rally in South Bronx in effort to court Black, Hispanic voters
Former President Donald Trump is set to hold a rally in deep-blue South Bronx, New York, on Thursday evening as he looks to court the Hispanic and Black voters that make up a majority of the area's population. Several thousand Trump supporters are expected to head to Crotona Park in the South Bronx for the former president's rally -- on a day off from his New York hush-money trial. Trump is expected to speak to the diverse voter base about crime -- a key issue for voters in the area. With his New York criminal trial coming to a near close, the state has been top of mind for the former New York business mogul, who has spent the last six weeks residing in Trump Tower and going to his trial in New York County Criminal Court.

US Supreme Court says South Carolina election map doesn't impermissibly exclude Black voters
The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a Republican-drawn South Carolina congressional district, reversing lower court rulings that had struck it down as a product of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering that excluded Black voters. Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the court in a 6-3 ruling from which the liberal justices dissented, said the lower court's decision that race was unconstitutionally used to diminish the influence of Black voters was "clearly erroneous" because it had not properly analyzed the facts.

House GOP calls Northwestern, Rutgers and UCLA leaders to testify on college protests, alleged antisemitism
The GOP-led House Education Committee on Thursday called on more university leaders to defend their handling of pro-Palestinian protests and respond to allegations of antisemitism on campus. Leaders from Northwestern, Rutgers and UCLA testified as the committee's main witnesses, joining the presidents of Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University amid a monthslong committee probe it says is aimed at rooting out antisemitism.

Justice Department and 30 states seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster through major antitrust suit
The Justice Department and 30 states filed a major antitrust lawsuit Thursday seeking the breakup of Ticketmaster owner Live Nation Entertainment over what they allege is the company's unlawful dominance over the concert ticket sales industry. "The result is that fans pay more in fees, artists have fewer opportunities to play concerts, smaller promoters get squeezed out, and venues have fewer real choices for ticketing services," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. "For too long, Live Nation and Ticketmaster have unfairly and illegally run the world of live events, abusing their dominance to overcharge fans, bully venues, and limit artists," New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

Kenyan mountaineer dies on Everest as he attempts to summit without supplemental oxygen
Kenyan mountaineer Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, who went missing with his guide on Wednesday morning on Mount Everest, has been found dead, officials announced Thursday. Kirui's body was found 62 feet, or about 19 meters, below Everest's peak, Nepal's Department of Tourism said. Kirui had been on a mission to summit the world's highest peak without supplementary oxygen, attempting to become the first African to achieve the feat.

2024 has been the most active tornado season to date since 2017
Wednesday was another day of severe weather across the country with more than 200 severe storm reports from New York to Texas. Wednesday’s severe weather included three reported tornadoes in Texas, with some of the worst damage in Bell County between Austin and Waco. On Friday, more severe weather is forecast for a huge part of the Heartland from the Dakotas all the way south to Texas, including the major cities of Dallas, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kansas City, Omaha and Fargo.

The head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said this week that he would leave his role in the aftermath of a probe that documented widespread allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination at the federal agency. Martin Gruenberg, a Democrat who began a five-year term in 2023, said he will remain in the top post at the FDIC until a replacement can be confirmed by the Senate, which could take months. Biden will announce a nominee for FDIC chair soon, the White House told ABC News in a statement this week.

Now, with immigration a top issue for voters in November, Donald Trump says, if elected again, he's determined to carry out his threat: to round up and deport millions of migrants living in the U.S. without legal permission. To do so, the former president said he would use local law enforcement and the National Guard to find such migrants living across the U.S. He also hasn't ruled out building detention camps on U.S. soil or activating the military as part of the effort. "On Day 1 of my new administration, I will seal the border, stop the invasion of people pouring through our border and send Joe Biden's illegal aliens back home where they belong," Trump said at a recent rally in Wildwood, New Jersey.

Senate to hold another election-year showdown vote over on immigration, border security bill
The Senate will vote Thursday for the second time in three months on a border security measure negotiated earlier this year by a bipartisan group of senators after Republicans blocked the bill from advancing earlier this year at the direction of former President Donald Trump. Both political parties are trying to establish themselves as tough on border security ahead of the 2024 election. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced over the weekend plans to bring the legislation back up for a stand-alone vote, after the measure earlier had been tied to aid to Ukraine and Israel.

Doctors, beauty queen in DC to advocate for CPR training and AEDs in schools
Chloe Burke, a 25-year-old upcoming Miss Texas contestant, will be in Washington D.C. Thursday to lobby for the HEARTS Act and Access to AEDs Act. Access to AEDs (or Automated External Defibrillators) is a deeply personal issue to Burke, who suffered a cardiac arrest in 2019 at University of Houston while she was cheerleading at a football game. On-field paramedics performed CPR and used an AED to get Burke’s heart pumping normally again.
