Employees at an Iowa medical care center mistakenly deemed a 66-year-old woman in hospice care dead and coordinated her transportation in a cloth bag to a funeral home, according to a report from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. The report noted that when a staff member at the funeral home unzipped her bag, they witnessed her "chest moving and she gasped for air." The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals fined the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center $10,000 for violating a resident's dignity and for failing to "assume the responsibility for the overall operation of the residential care facility."
Paco Rabanne has died at age 88 in Portsall, France. The fashion designer's death was announced on his company's Instagram Friday along with a black and white portrait of him captured in 1999. "The House of Paco Rabanne wishes to honour our visionary designer and founder who passed away today at the age of 88," the caption read.
As what U.S. officials call a massive surveillance balloon believed to be from China continued to fly over the continental United States, President Joe Biden faced growing pressure Friday to address the situation as Republicans said he needed to take stronger action against Beijing. Pentagon press secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder is scheduled to hold a press briefing at noon. While Biden has, so far, decided against ordering military action, a U.S. official said late Thursday that the U.S. was closely monitoring the situation and "keeping all options open."

The FBI said it's looking for a man who walked into a San Francisco synagogue with a pistol and fired several rounds, believed to be blanks. No one was injured and no damage was reported during the Wednesday evening incident at the Schneerson Jewish Center, the San Francisco Police Department said. The man walked into the synagogue during a gathering and around 7:20 p.m. he "made a verbal statement, pulled out a firearm, and shot several times," police said.

Following the death of Tyre Nichols after he was beaten by Memphis police on Jan. 7, just 39 percent of adults in the national survey are confident that the police in this country are adequately trained to avoid the use of excessive force. In 2014, 54 percent of adults expressed confidence that the police are adequately trained to avoid excessive force; that's since tumbled by 15 percentage points. Fifty-two percent said the police treat Black and white people equally; that's 11 points lower now.
A California cyclist died on Thursday after being struck by a car and then stabbed to death by the driver, authorities said. Deputies arrived at the scene to find a cyclist -- identified as 58-year-old Michael John Mammone -- "lying in the intersection suffering from severe injuries," the Orange County Sheriff's Department said in a press release.

A suspect has been charged with possession of a high-powered weapon and making criminal threats after a cache of high-powered rifles, shotguns and handguns were recovered at a man's Los Angeles apartment. Braxton Johnson, 25, was arrested for criminal threats on Thursday, according to police. Authorities initially said a mass shooting may have been thwarted, but the Los Angeles Police Department later issued a statement saying, in part: "At this point of the investigation, there are no indications that any persons were threatened with a firearm nor have we identified any intent by Johnson to plan a mass shooting incident."
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met Thursday with members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to discuss pushing policing reform in the wake of the death of Tyre Nichols. As the group gathered in the Oval Office, Biden said it was his hope that the "dark memory" of Nichols' death "spurs some action that we've all been fighting for." Attendees included the CBC chair, Rep. Steven Horsford, Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Raphael Warnock, Rep. James Clyburn, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Rep. Joe Neguse -- all Democrats.
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said it's investigating several deaths and injuries of U.S. citizens that took place on passenger vessels recently traveling in Antarctic waters. The Coast Guard, the National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies from around the world are deploying teams to Ushuaia, Argentina to investigate four instances that took place between Nov. 15 and Dec. 1, 2022, the agency said. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those impacted by these tragedies,” Capt. Gretchen Bailey, the Coast Guard Activities Europe commanding officer, said in a statement.
The Manhattan district attorney's office has recently threatened to file new criminal charges against former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. Weisselberg, 75, is currently serving jail time at New York's Rikers Island after he pleaded guilty to tax fraud in August. The new charges, the sources said, would involve insurance fraud, a detail first reported by The New York Times.
